How should future blind draws be handled by the KHSAA?

Featured Replies

I felt like they should have put 1-4 in a hat, draw them out and do the same for 5-8. That puts all teams in the rotation but doesnt set up the chance you have the nightmare 1-8 game. Plus it does keep the seperation of East-West.

Yes I do CR.

I suppose now is the part where you reveal the evidence proving me wrong?

Monday night here is the KHSAA's spin:

1. Blind draw for all districts.

2. Will rotate each year.

3. Keep first two round intra district to save expenses.

Sunday morning we learn:

1. Blind draw only for districts 3,4,5 and 6.

2. Districts 1,2,7 and 8 were not entered in the draw.

3. For Round 3 Julian Tackett unilaterally conducted a limited draw.

4. The new format is only for one year; no rotation.

The KHSAA governs all high schools in Kentucky that particitpate in KHSAA sanctioned sports. By treating four districts differently than the other four is unequal representation. Saying a draw was blind, misleading members of the BOC and only recanting the "blind draw" mantra after the CJ investigated is unethical.

CR, its not for just one year. I don't know where the author got that info. To the best of my knowledge the BOC agreed that there would be a rotation of the brackets.

And no one affilitiated with the BOC to the best of my knowledge ever stated Monday night or at any time that all districts were part of the draw. That's not accurate. By all means feel free to criticize the KHSAA all you want, but please be factually accurate in your criticisms.

The bottom line in all of this is: They (the KHSAA) did this to quiet the private\public debate. The only thing that may happen in expansion of classes is, that there might be (and I say might be) a 5th class added. We will not be going to 6 classes. If I was St. X or Trinity, I would not complain one bit. You guys will get to play in the third round and keep the gate instead of playing in the finals and giving ALL of the money to the KHSAA. The only thing that is acceptable at those two schools are championships. Getting to the state finals is not good enough unless you win.

So The CJ got this wrong:

A blind draw determined what district winners meet in the third round, and this fall, Trinity and St. X would meet each other in the third game of the playoffs, if they survive that long. http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060523/SPORTS05/60523034/1031

I think that's factually accurate. If the CJ got it wrong there should be a correction run. Five articles later, I still haven't seen one.

I would not be opposed to the idea of "The Guru" handling the draw..Would anyone else concur..

What a great idea for a web-cast. I want Watusi to hold the hat while Guru draws and I think Leatherneck should be the independant auditor.:D

Thats accurate I agree. But the inaccurate part of your post that I was referring to was your statement that as of Monday night, the KHSAA's spin was that the blind draw was for all teams. No one associated with the KHSAA (to the best of my knowledge) ever said on Monday or at any time that all schools were in the blind draw. If they made that spin, could you provide a link. I don't remember seeing it and I don't think that spin was spun by the KHSAA. Thus I believe there was no spin by the KHSAA that said all schools were in the draw and your post was inaccurate. And other than the CJ author, no one has ever said that it was only for one year. Have no clue where he got that.

I'm in.

Personally, I think any way other than the way they did it would be better...:thumb:

No reason to bring Jim Jones into this.

If you can make a case, make one.

And get your facts straight, it was grape Flavor Aid, not red Kool-Aid!

NOW THAT WAS FUNNY!!!!

1. The "blind draw" occured Monday correct?

2. When did the KHSAA first state that the "blind draw" wasn't blind for Districts 1, 2, 7 and 8?

2a. Was it only after an inquiry by the Courier Journal?

1. Yes, but I recall no KHSAA spin Monday night (or at any other time for that matter) to the effect that all schools were involved in the draw. Actually the binding BOC vote did not occur until Tuesday anyway.

2. I understand that Tackett sent an e mail to the football coaches advisory committee on Wednesday or Thursday (I was told about it but don't remember the exact day) of last week and posted the information on the listserve for all high school coaches on Friday, although I don't have access to that listserve and cannot confirm what I was told.

3. I don't know when when the inquiry was made by the CJ so I can't answer that question. I don't think it was going to be any kind of secret. Its just that the KHSAA does not live or operate to keep people on here informed as to what happened and when it happened. Perhaps in some people's minds they should. But please keep in mind that the staff of the KHSAA have a lot of things going on at this time of the year. Would it have helped defuse some of the questions on here if Tackett could have sent out a press release Wed morning informing all how the draw occurred? Sure. But again, I don't think the KHSAA staff operates to keep the BGP members informed.

1. Were the BOC members aware that the draw was not blind for Districts 1, 2, 7 and 8 when the binding vote was made on Tuesday?

2. Did that email inform the coaches that the draw was not blind for Districts 1, 2, 7 and 8?

How about keeping the public informed, let alone the member school institutions, players, parents, coaches? Quotes by Russell's Ivan McGlone, Sam Harp of Danville, Belfry's Philip Haywood, Boyle County's Chris Pardue, etc. reveal the coaches were alarmed and taken aback by the changes.

So what is the outcome of this "bracket fixing" scandal? Is someone getting fired? Reprimanded at least? I'll bet if a similar plaot was hatched to benefit the Louisville schools heads would roll.
