How should future blind draws be handled by the KHSAA?

Featured Replies

1. Were the BOC members aware that the draw was not blind for Districts 1, 2, 7 and 8 when the binding vote was made on Tuesday?

2. Did that email inform the coaches that the draw was not blind for Districts 1, 2, 7 and 8?

How about keeping the public informed, let alone the member school institutions, players, parents, coaches? Quotes by Russell's Ivan McGlone, Sam Harp of Danville, Belfry's Philip Haywood, Boyle County's Chris Pardue, etc. reveal the coaches were alarmed and taken aback by the changes.

I don't know what the BOC members knew and didn't know. All I know is that they told Tackett to do the draw and trusted him to do it.

I assume that the e mail informed them of how the draw was conducted, but it is possible that it did not. If you know someone on the football coaches advisory committee ask them. Perhaps someone on here on the football coaches advisory committee can shed some light on the matter.

I do think the KHSAA was going to inform the public (ie, the coaches) they just did not do it before the issue hit BGP. Perhaps a learning moment from this episode is that things hit BGP quicker than a NY taxi driver on his way home from work, and that to the extent the KHSAA cares about the uproar on here, they may want to issue notices and press releases quicker.

I guess some coaches were not aware of what the KHSAA was considering. But the idea of rotating the brackets was an idea supported and previously proposed by the football coaches advisory committee, which is supposed to somewhat be the voice of football coaches in Ky. To the extent the football advisory committee keeps its coaches informed of what it is proposing to the KHSAA, it should not be a surprise that the playoff rules were revised. The timing may have surprised them, but the KHSAA was considering the changes should not have. Again, I have to believe that the KHSAA is rather surprised by the uproar over this. The schools have asked for changes in the playoff rules, the BOC listened and made the changes that it felt it could without causing even greater travel related problems.

Benefit of the doubt???

I think the odds of KHSAA drawing 1 to play 2 and 7 to play 8 four times in a row (A,AA,AAA and AAAA) is 1/7 x 1/7 x 1/7 x 1/7 x 1/5 x 1/5 x 1/5 x 1/5 x 1/4 x 1/4 x 1/4 x 1/4, or 1 in 384,160,000. I could be wrong as I am not a math guy.

Once again, 28 out of 32 districts are unaffected by a blind draw.

FYI Powerball odds are 1 in 146,107,962.

You got an explanantion?

Despite personal feelings, I don't think we have to trust anything the KHSAA does with regard to Louisville/private schools, let alone with those odds.

One flaw in your reasoning, (assuming your numbers are correct) is that those are the odds for ANY set of combinations.

CentreRocks, LSURock:

Let us suppose, for argument sake, that the drawing was rigged? How does this hurt X? In all likelihood X will have to play PRP and Male to advance to a game with T (if T also gets that far). If X wins game 3, the rest should be downhill to the state title. Under the old system the road to state title would also have led through those 3 opponents. So it appears that the overall path to state should be about the same, just in a different order. With the new system X has a shot at splitting a huge pot with T for game 3. That money for X vs. T in the finals all went to the KHSAA under the old system.

I am not condoning the fact that the drawing was shrouded in secrecy or even perhaps rigged. I am saying that for X and T the goal is championship, so runner-up, 3rd, 5th or whatever is not that critical. But another huge X/T playoff pot will immensely help both schools. Contrary to many posters on BGP not affiliated with private schools, money does not grow on trees and this extra money will help extend already scarce resources for each institution.

While I am not happy with the whole situation, I do concur with the financial benefits for both schools.

The Committee, according to members, was told that the rotation could/should not include the possibility of the Mayfield / Lawrence County fiasco of a few years ago, and the center of the state was the issue.

Yes, the coaches advisory committee note did state that clearly, one of the members showed it to me.

The member institutions are notified, and will be more so. We have already been told that this issue will be a focal point of the summer coaches conference. As for Harp and Haywood, they may have a bit of selective amnesia. I have been in meetings on the committee before when the committee voted to try and seek some form of rotation, and now that they get it, they have bad memories. Other coaches havne't been head coaches in the business long enough to complain about it, he is just being sir echo. When he has Harp's tenure, Haywood's tenure, or even McGlone's, let him complain.

For those schools out in the state, this rotation (quit calling it a blind draw, all that did was establish year one) gives a fresh look at who they will play and allows some teams lots of opportunities they may not have had. Now if they will just approve that six class alignment.

It is a constant source of amazement that people clamor fo change, get change, and dislike change. As for the public being informed, such was done that day according to their web site. Leatherneck has it right though, "faster than speeding bullet" has been replaced by "faster than it can get posted on BGP" as a symbol of speed.

One point I haven't seen discussed is that it appears we've lost regional championships in this change.

If districts 7 and 8 were to with third-round games over districts 6 and 5, which regions are 7 and 8 champions of?

Guru and I must have been thinking alike. From an earlier post:

"As you mention, it's not like the KHSAA was not without detractors before this process. That being the case, doing the "blind draw" in private (even if conducted by a trusted employee) shows that they are either "tone deaf" or don't care what their "customers" and member schools think. Neither is a good result and both are emblematic of an organization that is "too big for its own britches."

Given that we've just come from the televised NBA Lottery, I'm sure Riherds, BGP or some BGP sponsor(s) would have paid $ for the backdrop at the press conference wherein the #s were drawn out of a hat. It would be an opportunity for some press coverage in an otherwise "dead" time for the KHSAA and/or football. I suspect the papers would have covered and maybe even a quick video clip on the news in Lexington & Louisville.

Missed opportunity in my opinion."
