August 31, 201511 yr Between the cost of living and the constant headaches you'd have to endure in every day life, you couldn't pay me enough to live up there. What constant headaches?
August 31, 201511 yr What constant headaches? Driving in general and parking are the two biggest ones. Parking in Brooklyn was a nightmare. We hung out with a friend of ours who lives there while we were in town, and he said it's like that everywhere. You either have to feed meters, or drive around neighborhoods hoping to be lucky enough to find a spot. It's not uncommon to have to drive around for anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to try to find a parking space that is probably two or three blocks from where you actually live.

You're talking about the big cities of NJ. Most of NJ is very nice and green. It's not Newark.
August 31, 201511 yr $90k a year??? Sign me up for that gig...My goodness. What is 90K a year in Northern New Jersey? About 65K a year here? Maybe less.
August 31, 201511 yr What is 90K a year in Northern New Jersey? About 65K a year here? Maybe less. My wife is a certified professional teacher, and she doesn't make close to that here. I understand the cost of living is higher there, and one would expect the compensation to reflect that. However, having lived in the Northeast, I found that compensation didn't usually make up for the higher cost of living. I will say that living up there (outside of Boston/Providence for me) was a lot better than I would have ever envisioned growing up in the South. The guy should have been terminated long ago if he was violating the attendance policy. Attendance and tardy are pretty much cut and dry, and they should be easy to administer.

I was just stating that 90K to us here is a world apart from 90K in areas of New Jersey near New York or Philadelphia. There are districts in Cincy where 65K is not an outlier. I believe Sycamore and Mason are two of those districts.
August 31, 201511 yr Guy is doing what a lot of people would do, getting away with what ever his bosses will allow. If you don't have fair and consistent discipline in place and practice it daily, you will always have employees pushing things to the edge...then when your fed up and you haven't addressed it in the past you are stuck with them.
August 31, 201511 yr While I agree teachers are underpaid, the difference in cost of living between KY and NJ is about 30%... That is about 100% more than the avg. teacher salary in Kentucky We are getting hosed......

August 31, 201511 yr FWIW NJ has the highest Property taxes in the country, Kentucky is around 30th or so. Property Taxes in most states are a major source of funding for schools. Look at the systems that pay the best in the state and they also have the highest property tax rates.
August 31, 201511 yr This falls clearly on management who did not document each and every occurence and start disciplinary procedures immediately and correctly. I used to be a union VP and have seen situations like this more than I care to count. My advice to management was always the same: document, document, document.
August 31, 201511 yr I'm a teacher, I've been late twice. Felt like a Piece of Spit both times. I've never missed instruction time, just homeroom.
