Nothing hurts more

Than seeing your child hurting. My girl fell in love with volleyball in gym class last year, and decided she wanted to try out for the 7th grade volleyball team this year. She went to open gym all last spring, and then again this summer when it picked back up. She worked so hard it. She would be out in the street every spare moment hitting the ball with me, her mom or brother. They posted the list of the girls who had made it yesterday. Chloe usually hides her emotions pretty well, unlike her dad, but yesterday she let them go. It definitely hurt this old dad seeing his baby girl hurting that way. We went to her favorite restaurant for lunch yesterday, and then a little retail shopping to help ease her pain a little bit. I know it's part of growing up, and she'll experience many of those along the way, but I hope it's a long time before she has to experience something like that again.

Got to suck it up and get her ready for next year! Two-a-day work outs, build her a spiking machine, take growth hormones...c'mon dad!

Seriously, when one door closes, another opens...something better is just around the corner for her.

As a parent it flat out sucks!

How did she find out? Did she have to go to school and read a list?

Yesterday was the official try out day even though they had been having the open gyms. After the tryout they posted a list of names of the girls that had made the team on the wall. When she came out to the car after the tryout she just sat down, shook her head no, and started crying.

She loves to run, and we talked about going out for the Cross Country team this spring. She seemed to like that idea.

I just don't get that method. Spare me the "oh it toughens them up for life" speech.

Email/text the "yes/no" to each student so they do not have to walk out of school crying.

I like the idea of eval sheets. While for a coach it's slightly time consuming, I think it's very useful.

Have different categories (for vball some basic ones would be digging, setting, serving, spiking, etc..) and grade each kid on a scale of 1-5. You can even include categories of Coachability, Hustle, Work Ethic, etc. Then at the bottom of the page you put "Release" or "Retain". Call the kids up one by one and give them their paper (which is folded over so only their name is visible). They are free to go once they get their paper. They can look at it immediately, wait until they get to the car, wait until they get home, or whenever - as long as it's before practice starts for those retained.

That way the kids don't have to go through that process of crying in front of everyone if they don't look until later AND they know what they need to work on, whether they made the team or not.

I'll never forget the day my daughter didn't make the Ryle Varsity Cheerleading team, especially when she was on the squad the year before.

I can't remember what was worse, seeing the disappointment in her tears or the way her "friends" in the squad treated her after she got cut. I never knew girls could be so cruel.

Coach Randy Anderson said it best after try outs to everyone as a group before it was announced who made it, something along these lines, "We aren't saying no, we are simply saying not right now. We hope all of you go home and work on your games. If you have any questions or areas where you might need guidance on what you need to work on, please feel free to ask".
