Is Mayfield............

Featured Replies

I think the last game for each team is what a lot of people are looking at when they compare these two teams. Mayfield was lucky to survive the championship game against a decent Williamsburg team while DeSales won handily over a NCC.

Maybe Mayfield beats DeSales, but based off of the last game each played only...DeSales looked 2-3 TDs better.

Yeah and if you had seen the 1st Russellburg game you would have given them a chance in the 2nd one.

We played a much better Williamsburg team than was expected and we were lucky to get outa there with a win.

I don't buy for one second that DeSales was a favorite against Mayfield.

WE will make some of you believers in November at War Memorial. Not the easiest place for a team to come in and win.

I expected the Cards to win fairly easily against Williamsburg as did most others. We clearly we not ourselves, partly us and partly Williamsburg who you have to take your hat off too. As for DeSales, the computers say we were better and they are very accurate late. Common opponent Murray favors us as well. Either team could win but Mf would get my vote but last year is just that and what now matters is this year with them in the same class

I'm not doubting this years team, I'm doubting last years. I fully expect Mayfield to be in the Finals, anything short of that will feel like a major upset to me.

I think the difference between 2013 and 2014 games vs Williamsburg was the Burgs QB, who was more versatile and had much better scrambling ability than the QB the year before. Plus, that Williamsburg team brought back 18 starters from the year before runner-up team, so, you have to figure they were a year older and stronger and experienced and the fact they were embarrassed the year before, so, they had a bad taste in their mouths. Add to that that last years Mayfield team as a whole was not quite as strong as the year before, especially on the defensive end, although they masked it pretty well during the season and really didn't face too many teams that had a very good passing game like the Jackets had.

Now, as far as comparing the Cards and Colts, I thought the Colts looked much more impressive in B.Green than Mayfield did. But, in saying that, I think Williamsburg would have handled NCC, who was the beneficiary of a weak side of the bracket, but, were far from the juggernaut of some past Bred teams. They were barely a 500 team who Beechwood handled with ease, a team Mayfield beat on the road a week earlier in the semis.

I think it was the same starter at quarterback for Williamsburg both seasons, but you are right, the quarterback and the entire team looked much more comfortable on the big stage in 2014 than they did in 2013.

No, Olinger was the QB in 13 and he graduated. The WR from 13 moved to QB in 14 and he was just a better overall athlete than Olinger.

Williamsburg QB in 2014 was Skyler Griffith. 2013 was Dalton Sizemore. Griffith never played in the title game in 2013. Olinger is a hazard kid from 2011 team at WR.

thats right.. regardless, they weren't the same QBs from both years..

Not the same qb. He was injured his jr year and didn't even play qb

Very good point. I'd also add that the advantage could go to Mayfield simply because it is an odd year and any potential playoff matchup between Mayfield and DeSales (or CAL) would be at Mayfield. With teams that seem to be almost equal you have to search further down the line to find a distinguishing difference between the two.

That very well could be true. However let's remember DeSales technically plays all their games on the road. We are used to traveling. Our new field won't be ready until next year.

I think what he is saying is that having to travel to Mf would be different due to the distance and it being Thanksgiving so schedules are different, game time is different, ect

That's what I said.. 2 different QBs from 13 and 14 teams.. Sizemore in 13 and Griffin in 14.. And, imo, Grifin was the better of the 2.. More mobile, more accurate, better runner and the WR corp was better..

Personally, i feel that Mayfield can compete with any team..they always seem to find a way to win & they've been doing it that way for over 100 years..add the fact that these kids know how to win, one of the best coaching staff in the state, and the rich tradition..it will be safe to say that the train to the 2a championship rolls through mayfield & war memorial stadium ( one of the state's toughest places for visiting teams to win)..

If Mayfield makes it that far, then you are correct. It will run through Mayfield this year.

A better question maybe who will be coming to Mf to play, with what Desales lost to graduation one has to wonder if they will be able to muster together a strong enough group to make it this far
