mcpapa
Sad. The earth loses thousands of different animal species annually. Largely due to habitat loss.

ggclfan
I am not trying to be funny or cute here...I really am not sure. Is it hunting that has made the Northern White Rhino basically extinct? Could it be disease or lack of water or something else? Or do we know the hunters have killed them off? No matter what the reason(s), it is sad... doomer
Very sad what we are doing with this planet God gave us. Isn't about time for a pro-lifer to hijack this thread because we care about wildlife?
bugatti
Crazy. So is this the traditional rhino as we know it, or are there are type of rhino species?

oldgrappler
Poaching. I have read in the past where legal hunting promotes the conservation of wildlife by creating economic benefit for the management of wildlife. Both the local native population and the government benefits and animal populations are preserved. The real enemy is the black market which provides incentive to hunt indiscriminately for those willing to take the risk. Rhino horns are sought after in Asia as a cure for many diseases. In 2008 it was reported that the horn had miraculously cured a VIP from Viet Nam of liver cancer. The value of rhino horn shot up nd became more valuable than gold or cocaine. Hence, more poachers. But this article from Smithsonian.com says that there were 20,000 white rhinos in 2008. How could the population fall off so fast? History, Travel, Arts, Science, People, Places | Smithsonian If the OP is true, it is very sad indeed. Okay, so now I read the link provided in the OP and it was a sub species that is nearly extinct. The article said that they realized too late that they were in danger and it was too late to reverse the decline.
