Per the article it could be a trial payment issue. Either way, I think we need to wait until the dust settles in a few months. If people like their music and keep buying it they have nothing to worry about.

He doesn't have any issues selling his music on ITunes, but with the streaming being activated does have an issue with the paltry streaming fees and the music automatically getting streamed without artist consent to begin with. Spotify is even less, I think around .01cent.

I remember hearing conversations about how much money artists make from selling records and if I recall correctly a lot of artists in the music industry barely make $1.00/record sold or something like that. The really good ones may be able to make up to around $3-5.00. Most artists make their money by touring and other means other than selling records don't they?

That's my understanding. Touring and merchandise are where the big chunks of cash come from and the record labels take a big chunk of the music sales (and also put up a lot of money for marketing and promotion and studio time).

A lot of rappers lost big money to the studios because they had to have extravagant videos. Horrible way to have your career stifled. Because you wanted to have the tightest video on Rap City. :lol2: :no:

For those of us lesser individuals who have made a switch over to android for the time being, how is it any different than spotify? Not that you can't get spotify on apple, but just curious?

Well, until YouTube or some other authority takes away the means to do so, I'll keep using it.

I always hated the idea of paying for music without an actual CD or Album. As long as I can convert it from youtube video's I'm happy. As far as sound quality goes, it's playing from my iphone and not a big stereo system so I don't mind the quality at all.

Here's the deal. The artists do see a piece of the fee, and if you think about millions of people paying $10/month, that's a pretty big piece of pie to divide every month. Also, paid downloads won't go away. If PP (or whoever is paying for Apple music) discontinue the service, they no longer have access to the music they just downloaded. It's a real nice incentive to keep paying something. And part of something is better than all of nothing. So I don't see many users opting out once the opt in. Which means a pretty constant revenue stream. Back to paid downloads, they'll still exist. And many people who aren't power users will continue to pay for downloads, rather than pay for a monthly service. And physical copies of music will still be available, although they are getting harder and harder to find. But this is a real shot in the arm for older artists who haven't produced new music in forever, who's music is now readily and easily available again.

The bolded is exactley why I won't pay for Apple Music. It sould suck to lose all the songs I downloaded if in 2 years I stop the subscritpion. They kind of strangle hold you to continue paying for it when It would be better to join the RCA get a 1,000 cd's for a penny lol

This was always true and why many artists and bands would go on tour because that is where they made their money.

There's an article out there somewhere that breaks down how much artists made off of album sales (i'm too lazy to look for it right now). Those revenues are split lots of different ways, so the artists do make very little and have to rely on merch and touring. The big groups often get advances and make more money upfront, and very little on the back end. I do remember from my time in the business, that CD's (and records and cassettes before them), when featured on sale (especially the new releases) are very often sold below cost.
