November 9, 201510 yr What I am curious to see is how the offense would change with DB as the QB. Would we we see more read option? Would more short/intermediate passes be completed? Remember what Dawson said when asked during the summer how the QBs stacked up - he said DB was the better passer on the intermediate routes. Unfortunately, PTs best game is the deep pass or the long out and those take time that he's not always getting. I still think PT starts this week but unfortunately for him he will have a very, very short leash - his fault or not. If you look closely the pass plays called in the Miss State game were different for Barker than they were for Towles. They ran quick passing game stuff with Drew and on two plays Drew checked to a different play. Dawson likes to run zone read but after their second game he stopped trying because PT was not reading it correctly, actually he never read it, he just gave it every time.
November 9, 201510 yr I can't say who I believe should lead the team because none of us have seen enough of Barker to know what he can do at the college level. Let me see some of Barker and I'll get back to ya on this. Personally I don't think he can do any worse. But at this point it's hard to tell. The recievers drob some balls that could be catches, and the oline obviously needs work. A better qb could work around the line play in some games, but I'm not sure we can fix the recievers problem. At this point they have been trained not to lay their lself out due to fear for their livelihood. With all of the balls being thrown behind or above them, I can't say that I blame them. Their job is to run their route and catch a catchable ball, not risk their life every other pass on an uncatchable ball.

Maybe you are correct, DB certainly couldn't be any worse than PT running zone read and maybe a short-intermediate passing game is what they need. I'm not sure though that if I were DB, I'd want to be thrown into SEC play with the current O-line.

They do not run zone read with PT anymore since about the second game of the season because he gave it every time. Since they can't run the zone read they have to account for everyone on the LOS and that sometimes means a LB goes unblocked because of numbers. If they have 6 in the box that is one more than the OL can block because the QB is no threat. That means they have 5 guys left to focus on the WR's. If they put a TE in to help they just bring another LB into the box, so now it is 6 blocking 7, not counting the SS if they roll him down. Having no zone read hurts the offense a ton because you are eliminating a player from the offense on every run play.

I watched a play against UT where Pat pulled it on one of the worst reads I've ever seen and got tackled immediately for a loss. He isn't a threat in the zone read because he's not a very good runner and makes poor reads.

November 11, 201510 yr The problem isn't 5 blocking 6 or 6 blocking 7. The problem is our 6 can't block their 4. No need to blitz. Drop 7 and opponents still get pressure. Amazed Pat has stayed healthy. All that said, record will still turn out as most expected. Cats will play in a bowl game. Baby steps.
