I have a new rule proposal. So many people complain about there being multiple blowouts early in the playoffs. E.g. Bowling Green v. Breck Co or a Mayfield v. Caverna type matchup. I know people say it's because of the 6 class system, and there is truth to that, but that is the system we are stuck with. I also think that the 6 class system has increased football popularity and that's a good thing. There have been some 4 seeds upset 1 seeds and IMHO that was validated the 6 class system in some ways.

 

Even so, I hate seeing a 66-0 type score in the first round so this is my suggestion for the PLAYOFFS only. When the running clock score is reached, 42 pts, the scoreboard is frozen for the remainder of the game. The running clock rule can still be incorporated but the score will remain the same regardless of what happens in the game.

 

This is why I think this will help (example):Mayfield is up 42 on Caverna in the 1st qtr. They have run 10 plays resulting in 7 tds and Caverna has gone 3 and out or turned it over every time. Caverna has 29 players (if that many) and Mayfield has 65. Let's say Mayfield then goes in at half and decides to play JV the rest of the game. Caverna has no JV and plays their varsity the rest of the game and runs off 21 points. This ticks off Coach Morris who then puts his varsity back in and scores 21 more. Everybody is mad and a key player for Mayfield now has a pulled hammy. Now the score ends up 63-21 and people on message boards say "Mayfield has some issues on D" which ticks off the Mayfield faithful.

 

Now let's say the score got frozen at 42-0. Mayfield lets all their JV play out the remainder of the game and gets lots of PT for young kids and no one gets hurt. Plus, a 42-0 score is a decisive victory, but doesn't look as bad as 66-0. Everyone in Mayfield is happy. Caverna gets to let their seniors play out their last game, gets to score some points, and end the game with some dignity at not getting beat 80-0 by one of the best teams in the state. Everyone in Caverna is happy (as you could be getting beat 42-0).

 

Coaches on both teams would be happy. Mayfield's coaches maintain a shutout and get to spend some time coaching up their young kids against a varsity team. Caverna's coaches are happy cause they get to encourage some Srs. to continue to play hard through a whole game instead of having them sulk on the sidelines as their career winds down.

 

The stats that are accrued in the playoffs really don't matter cause the voting for all state has already occurred (I think). So the media shouldn't have much to complain about.

 

I used the Mayfield and Caverna teams as fictional examples so please don't tear my head off Mayfield fans, I know your JV wouldn't allow 21 agains anyone:up:

 

Tell me what you think. I do only think this should apply in the playoffs. I think most schools try to avoid scheduling games that they know are going to be that ugly. I also recognize that "stats" are more important to some people in the regular season.

The Raceland faithful could say they may like this idea, however, Ram and my point is that the kids that are on the team getting blown out don't want to play the game to begin. In the first round, Raceland usually plays Phelps, South Floyd, or Allen Central. My sophomore through senior seasons I played each of the three teams in each of my three seasons and each and every game they said the same thing: "why are we even here?".

 

My question is what do we do for those kids in that position who don't want to play that game BECAUSE they're going to get beat 66-0 or, in this case, 42-0?

That's the only problem with that. Someone, some ONE will continue to keep score.

Freezing the scoreboard doesn't make the losing team feel any better, nor does it do anything to keep the winning team "happy". Now matter how you sugarcoat or spin, a beat down, is a beat down. And as was mentioned, every one in the joint knows what the real score is, regardless of what you say on the scoreboard or how the final gets reported. This is a classic case of putting fancy clothes on a pig. You still just have a pig.

Although I can understand the idea of a 42-0 type scenario is to not completely embarrass / humiliate a #4 seed by a 66-0 type score, imo it would embarrass them the same if not more so. Reason being would be although the final score would read 42-0 I can promise that the players, coaches and fans will know what a beating it was. I may be in a minority in this but I would be even more humiliated by having to hear or see reports like .. "Double mercy rule, 1.) running clock and 2.) it was so bad they stopped putting the actual score on the board" or ...."they stopped keeping score, followed by a laugh/mocking the losing team".

Bottom line is that it's an "everyone gets a trophy" society / politically correct world and no matter how one tries to sugar coat it, a group of kids that shouldn't had been there in the first place (some 4 team districts had 0-10 teams in a playoff) and probably didn't even want to be there would still be embarrassed.

I know that others feel differently and I respect those opinions. I just disagree.

IMO the only way to prevent this type of a game is to not play it. I much prefer 3 teams advancing from each district with the district champion getting a 1st round playoff bye. That rewards the regular season district champion plus prevents an embarrassing blowout plus a chance of a kid being injured badly in a game like that.

Actually I wouldn't be opposed to only 2 teams advancing. That scenario would allow teams to schedule/play an 11 game regular season plus giving a weak football team an extra game per season.

What about the statistical data? I know that wins and losses matter the most but I was wondering what would happen to the stats. Some people break records in games that are one sided like that. I know that they are meaningless yards and touchdowns but those numbers do matter.......

I don't think it's necessary in 3-6A. Plenty of 3 and 4 seeds win games, and many games are competitive across the state. Maybe the 3s and 4s don't win, but they're not getting humiliated.

What happens if the team up 42-0 in the second quarter puts the JV in and they score another 30? Or 40? Even though the score is frozen at 42-0 the losing team probably is not going to be too happy that the JV is scoring at will against them.

So long as the KHSAA doesn't produce any more loaded districts like the super district, I would be fine with that. It says something when the third place from one district wins state.

If my team is 10-0, and we get matched up with an 0-10 team (a team that should NEVER be in the playoffs), I would have zero remorse beating them by 70. I wouldn't TRY to run it up, but if it happens it happens.

 

I agree with @tdyballgame, stop letting everyone and their grandmothers in the playoffs, and some of this will fix itself.

If your team is 10-0 facing an 0-10 team, don't you pull starters way early to prepare for next week and allow the JV/Frosh to finish the last 3 quarters? You might still get to 70 but you've protected your key guys and afforded the other team a better chance of being competitive for most of the game.

It's not your job to help the other team be competitive. In the playoffs it's you job to prepare your team for the next game, if that means keeping yous starters in to keep them in game condition then so be it. When Trinity blasted Simon Kenton 72-0 a few years ago the game basically became a practice for Trinity after the 1st quarter to get ready for the following week.

 

We take to many teams to the playoffs, plain and simple. Trinity won the championship last year but as far as I'm concerned shouldn't have been there because they finished 3rd in their district. The Super District was a hybrid animal though, cobbled together in the spirit of political correctness. Had those 4 teams been spread out in other districts they all would have gone into the playoffs seeded 1. In most cases a 4 seed from 1 district can't be competitive with a 1 seed from another, although next year I will watch with great interest to see if a 5th place team from Jefferson Co. can compete with 1st place team from NKY. That could be very telling of exactly the stature of 6A football in NKY.
