This is the coolest drone I've seen so far. You could put the arm band that has the locator in it on a Running Back and see what happens! Pretty cool

We filmed a select soccer game, the drone was hovering 200' up, over a corn field adjacent to the field, and provided GREAT video. It is a little bit loud, so some of the parents (on that near sideline to the drone) were a little annoyed, but the boys couldn't hear it on the field. HD quality video and really helpful.

Pretty sure kHSAA recently banned us from using these at games. Don't know why practices would be forbidden though.

Can't afford a drone, but bought a Sony POV camcorder from eBay that has a small lense assembly that connects to the main housing with a 9 ft cord. Mounted it on a painters pole that extends from 6 ft to 18 ft and get a pretty good view and it's portable and can move around unlike our endzone tower.

The monitor part uses a small Sony battery and Sony memory sticks, has zoom, start and stop etc. here is a still shot from practice

One of the shows on ESPN, Outside the Lines or E:60, did a story on the use of drones in Texas High School Football. (I believe it was last fall when it aired). Some of the schools there were using them to film practice and games. As a result of a few schools doing it, the use of them was spreading. It was an interesting story to watch.

When I was fighting a 300-lb. bull shark last week, the captain pulled a drone out and flew it up to film and take pictures of the fight. It was awesome.

At least three NFL teams are using remote-controlled aircraft to film practices. And that practice has drawn the attention of the Federal Aviation Administration.

 

According to Bloomberg News, the FAA is looking into the use of so-called drones by the Cowboys, Giants, and Patriots, because it’s technically illegally to fly unmanned aircraft for a commercial purpose without first getting a waiver from the FAA.

 

The agency said it has been in touch with the Cowboys, in order to explain to America’s Team “the proper procedure for obtaining the necessary exemption” from the American government. The FAA also intends to contact both the Giants and the Patriots about the procedure for getting the requisite FAA waiver.

 

None of the three teams obtained a waiver before putting the drones into use. They can be used indoors without restriction or limitation. When used outside, the FAA has full jurisdiction.

 

Teams can use drones outdoors without FAA permission, if the drones are being operated by contractors who have obtained FAA authorization.

 

At least one other team — the Titans — is using drones, but the FAA has not yet added them to the list of teams to be contacted. The NFL said it has not yet heard from the FAA about the issue, and that the NFL has not yet discussed drone policies.

I assume each high school using drones needs to contact the FAA to get clarification on the rules. On one hand high schools may be exempt but on the other hand they are governmental agencies so they may need the waiver.

 

Please let any schools you know of that use drones to consult the FAA.

I'm not sure if it would be considered commercial or not. However they do make money from it, so I imagine it could very well fall into that category.

I am not sure but it's possible any school could be using some taxpayer money to fund the drones and if so I would think the high schools need the permit just like anyone else.
