What if a parent/volunteer, who has a new toy to play with, goes to a practice, shoots footage, and gives it to the team?

Not much different than any number of photographers giving the school/program pictures.

Can't afford a drone, but bought a Sony POV camcorder from eBay that has a small lense assembly that connects to the main housing with a 9 ft cord. Mounted it on a painters pole that extends from 6 ft to 18 ft and get a pretty good view and it's portable and can move around unlike our endzone tower.

How much did that run you? Did you have someone hold it the entire time?

We don't film with drones but we have a couple of drones playing defensive line......

And I assume it won't be long and the FAA will revisit the "Drone Rules" and make them much more stringent.

 

In other words, any school using drones in any fashion that doesn't contact the FAA is negligent in my opinion.

Sorry for delay, missed this somehow. The Sony Camera is a HXR-MC1, it's discontinued by Sony and originally cost $2100, but you can usually find it on eBay for an average of $600, I got mine for $400, seen it as cheap as $250 often listed as high as $1000. Then I got a couple of quick release assemblies and a pole adapter that converts the pole end down to 1/4" for camera mounting and mounted it to a painters pole. I have two mounts for the monitor, one at the height for sitting when holding the pole, one for standing. And yes you have to hold the pole the entire time. But with the camera and everything it weighs about 10 lbs. next time I am at Fern Creek I will get a picture of the assembled pole and post it.

And if your school is using a drone bring this thread up to them. That way they either do the right thing or they are in deep when their less than commercial grade drone with an experienced operator does something wrong.

Yep, banned by KHSAA. Believe it has to do with FAA regulations and general liability.

With several (NFL) teams already experimenting with using drones to film practices, the Federal Aviation Administration began looking into the usage of such equipment by the NFL.

 

According to Jonathan Vanian of Fortune Magazine, the FAA has approved NFL Films to use drones for filming purposes with certain restrictions on how they can be used.

 

The approval only allows for usage of drones in stadiums that are empty. Therefore, footage of games in action still won’t be happening soon. The drones may not be larger than 55 pounds and can’t fly higher than 400 feet. They also must remain in visual range of the operator at all times.

 

The approval from the FAA came on Sept. 17.
