FIFA Executives arrested on corruption charges

Featured Replies

I don't know as it wasn't the show that was listed in the online information for that time slot. I only caught part of it as I wanted to watch the entire show at a later time. They had recordings of FIFA members fishing for bribes.

The Guardian says they have a statement from someone in the group lobbying for the failed England 2018 bid that said he had someone on the selection committee from Venezuela tell him that the elector wanted a British knighthood in exchange for his vote. These people had absolutely no shame whatsoever.

These guys have to be the most arrogant people on Earth. They flaunted their corruption so it became a running joke...they just thought nobody would ever come after them I guess...

I saw where the new Attorney General was leading this investigation on this case prior to being named AG...I would guess the resources to pursue this cases will be pretty much unlimited.

I had no idea that Qatar was such a soccer world power.

I'm going to be 100% honest here: I had only a vague idea that Qatar existed before they won the bid. I vaguely remember thinking, "What country is that in again?". Boy was I surprised to learn it IS the country.

The city where the finals will be in 2022 has not been built yet!

I can't believe I'm about to say this: I think I want Sepp Blatter to be re-elected today. I loathe Michel Platini and I don't know that this Prince Ali is going to do anything differently. The devil you know and all that...

What I've really learned from reading the indictment is that FIFA is far less of a problem at this time than the pigs in charge of CONCACAF and CONMEBOL.

FIFA is so corrupt they reelect the same guy who was in charge of this mess. Classic.

It was an election between him and a Jordanian prince backed by other corrupt people. The choice was a bit of a false one. UEFA is trying to align itself as a victim when all they want is payoffs of a different sort and to make their own power grab with a friend at the helm.

Blatter was actually smart about the whole thing. He supported the USA's World Cup bid from the beginning and I think that's because he was never looking for small kickbacks but the vast sums of perfectly legal money to be made by holding it in a country as vast and wealthy as here. Blatter oversaw corrupt people; he's less complicit in the corruption than it might first appear.

Better to have Blatter than to conceivably be stuck with someone worse.

Sounds like Warner (just arrested) is going to try to blow this whole thing up. He is saying he is taking the whole thing down...this is going to get really interesting. If Warner starts singing, WOW!!!!

The big problem with Warner is that along with whatever truths he tells on his fellow conspirators and cohorts, he'll include countless exaggerations, half-truths, and outright lies designed to make his enemies look bad. He's a complete lunatic and definitely can't be trusted.

I mean, the guy released a video earlier in the week in which he quoted an article from The Onion as part of his proof. The guy is completely disconnected.

He'll use this opportunity to his own benefit in any way he can.

How long has this investigation been percolating in the offices of the FBI? Yesterday they unsealed former CONCACAF and FIFA official Chuck Blazer's guilty plea and testimony on this matter... from November 2013. It appears that was the breakthrough moment.

Full Testimony: Guilty plea begins in earnest on pg. 29

He admits in counts 1-3 of taking bribes related to the 1998 and 2010 World Cups and the CONCACAF Gold Cups of 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2003.

Counts 4-9 are completely fascinating because the dude just DIDN'T FILE INCOME TAX RETURNS FOR SIX YEARS. He's at the top of CONCACAF and the Secretary Bloody General of FIFA during that time. They know you're making money, dude. Even Tony Soprano knew you had to have that bogus W-2 to cover up for all the money made off the books.

How mad are the other folks on the FIFA Executive Committe and the company presidents charged with bribery this morning after reading testimony that they all got busted because the stupid American didn't file any taxes?

It is going to be a beautiful summer watching this den of thieves turn on each other...this story just fascinates me and I look forward to reading the next chapter every day.

I'm the first to admit that I don't follow the game. I'll watch the occasional WC match or even a Premier League matchup on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

But this whole thing is like a train wreck - I can't help but look.
