May 21, 201511 yr Meanwhile Jon Moscot fired 6 shutout innings last night giving up just 3 hits and lowering his ERA to 2.06. Keep in mind he's a pretty polished and seasoned pitcher, he threw 166 innings last year and likely wouldn't need to be on an innings count. He could finish out the entire season in the rotation and give us a glimpse of what the 23 year old has to offer. The Marquis experiment should now be over.

May 21, 201511 yr Reds have been walking a thin line most of the season between being competitive and being irrelevant and they are now falling to the irrelevant side. They cannot afford to give up games and that is what they are doing every time Marquis takes the mound. If they are just trying to buy innings, it won't matter any more if they keep rolling him out there because they will be completely out of it. They have to go for it every night with this team. I say cut Badenhop and move Marquis to the pen in the long man role. He has enough stuff and experience to have a chance to be effective in that role.
May 21, 201511 yr I'd say the overall decline of top of the lineup is a big factor in that. I would go with the BO of: 1.Hamilton 2.Votto 3.Phillips 4.Frazier 5.Byrd 6.Cozart 7.Bruce 8. Whoever is catching 9.Pitcher until the All-Star break. No more days off for anyone unless injured, they have had more than enough days off(this isn't construction work, it's baseball)

May 21, 201511 yr Some observations that I have seen over the last few days. This team has more guys that have absolutely no clue at the plate and it is even worse with runners in scoring position. Two nights ago you have 2nd and 3rd with one out and do not score and last night you have the sacks full and do not score. Hamilton either bats 9th or heads to the minors because he cannot hit at this level. Another guy forced up because of depth issues. Cozart needs to bat 7th, right before the pitcher who bats 8th if Hamilton stays. I would think about batting Bruce leadoff and putting Votto right behind him in the 2 hole. I then come back with Phillips 3rd and Frazier 4th. Hope is that Bruce sees nothing but fastballs and gets himself going. Can steal a base if need be as well and if Hamilton bats 9th you might have something cooking with Votto coming to the plate. Phillips has been clutch with men in scoring position. You can flip/flop Byrd and Frazier however you want to in the 4 or 5 hole. Pena/Mesaroco that bat 6th and go from there. This team has decent enough hitting pitchers that Hamilton could bunt over from time to time.

Everyone likes Hamilton because he is so fun to watch on those rare occasions when he gets on base. However, he's been a huge problem the last 2 season. The leadoff position is absolutely killing the Reds this year. For the season batters hitting in the leadoff spot are hitting .179 with a .236 OBP and a .280 Slg. That is the position in the batting order that gets the most plate appearances. The number 9 hitters are batting .160 with a .229 OBP. That is what is batting in front of your run producers in the 2-3 spots. There's your problem.

This team is not going anywhere this season and he is not going to help them turn it around. He won't be here next season. Use the young guys. If they have some of them on innings limits rotate them between the #5 spot and long relief. When they get to their limit shut them down for the season and bring up another prospect or retread. I'm sure Marquis would clear waivers so you could bring him back if you run out of young guys but there's no reason for him to be taking up an active roster spot right now.
