The Scott and Newcath game should be a good matchup to attend. They both have great running backs.

I agree with you and many that this has become so saturated that it simply seems like a money grab.

 

There is no rhyme or reason behind how this is set up. It would be one thing if it was set up to have rivals play against eachother or have district games etc. where the games meant something, but it's a mish mosh of games that have nothing to do with other games how they are set up. You have a Ryle vs Boone Co. which is a rivalry but then you have a Indianapolis Cathedral vs Moeller which is, well, no history.

 

If you are going to do something like this then make the games somewhat meaningful. There are so many teams involved and spread out over such a large area that this entire thing comes across as a meaningless way to make money. Even if they just made it a "Kickoff to the Season" and had this on the 1st week of games to celebrate the start of the season would even have more meaning than what it is now where it is played over couple weeks.

 

What they should do to make a true showcase is hold all the games at PBS over a weekend, that would be pretty cool. They have so many teams now they can't even do something like that. Another reason they probably don't do that is the promoters wouldn't make as much money because they'd have to pay to play at PBS.

 

When I attended HS, they did have the Buddy LaRosas Classic in 1900, 1991. The first year No. 1 Berwick, Pa.; No. 6 Brentwood, Tenn., No. 12 Moeller; Chicago Mt. Carmel Tulsa Booker T. Washington and Pittsburgh North Hill's all participated. #1 Berwick lost to Fairfield. I remember fairly decent crowds, they sold 44,000 tickets for the day. I remember Massilon the next year. They were loud chanting TIG--ERS.

Remember these games well. I've posted on them in past threads about the current event. It was a big deal for the city as a whole and a lot of tickets were sold. It was kind of a first of its kind event at the time. It was also managed very well, although if the current heat guidelines were in place then, they'd have never finished the slate of games.

 

Sidenote to your post, the Fairfield team that beat USA Today's No. 1 Berwick, went on to finish 5-5ish (maybe 6-4, maybe 6-5) but I think it was 5-5, and did not make the playoffs.

A few quick takes as we discuss the event:

 

My guess is at least the host school (at HS stadiums) is making more than a regular season game (money up front is my guess). Otherwise, why would schools keep signing up?

 

Event is obviously making money beyond that, or it would lack for a promoter.

 

I have no problem with either. I do have a problem when what smells a lot like greed takes over an event as this has lately. If this is a marquee event then sell it as that, and play it over one weekend. Three weeks and dozens of sites is chasing the money.

 

A Indy/Cincinnati HS rivalry, as I alluded to earlier, seems to be something organizers want to push moving forward. May be the best option to offer some (high profile) games. I'd rather see some early season in city matchups like.....
