Memphis Meteorologist Slams John Calipari, Calls Him a Snake Oil Salesman

Featured Replies

A Memphis meteorologist took exception to some comments made by John Calipari following his Hall of Fame speech last week.

Joey Sulipeck, a meteorologist at FOX 13 in Memphis, hammered Calipari during a live broadcast. Sulipeck called Calipari a snake oil salesman and a spin doctor.

The rant was triggered by Calipari’s comparison of Kentucky to his former schools (Memphis and UMASS):

“I loved those places. I loved those jobs,” he said of Memphis and UMass, “but you were at the little table, you weren’t at the big table. You never got to carve the turkey. You had plastic forks and knives.”

What he just said was ignorant and cheap. He’s a spin doctor. I hope somebody YouTubes this and sends it to him. That cat is a spin doctor, snake oil salesman that will turn anything in his direction.”

He continued, “Say you’re at the kid table with plasic utensils? Give me a plastic utensil and walk by me, Calipari.”

I'm sure Cal care's what this moron thinks about him...

I bet that if Coach Cal was still in Memphis, he wouldn't be saying this stuff...

I get why he was bothered. Neither chose the best words to make their point.

Yeah not a great Calipari quote. He usually is much more careful about letting his arrogance show publicly.

Everyone loves where they are at the time. When Cal moves on, the next school will be greater than UK when he is asked. Tell me a coach who has made a quote that says the last school was better.

I do agree the comments were not that flattering. He should have said he took them to the big table, even without the luxuries given to him at UK.

He has referred to this at least 3 times in the past month. He's right. UMass and Memphis are nice programs, but limited in influence, budget, and regionality. Cal made both national players. Give him unlimited resources that Coach K, Ole' Roy, and Bill Self has and let's see how good he can be. So far, he's been pretty darn good.

Not saying he is not correct, just saying he normally chooses his words more carefully and does not put down programs. This is definitely a put down (again albeit correct) of these two programs.

I'd imagine part of what Calipari was referring to was the conferences as well.

Well my first impression was that he is a "meteorologist"......Maybe he knows sports, was or is an athlete himself but lets face it - has anyone ever looked at or listened some of those guys. I would be willing to bet that he has never been in a locker room in his life or pulled up a jock strap  :D. #2 thought on him being a meteorologist was they pretty often get their forecast wrong so, if he doesn't even know his own job then I don't put much confidence in anything that they say :idunno: .

Final impression / comment is that if we ever are talking Science education and that type of information then he just might have us :isurrender:.

I will list how much that I, and am pretty sure what and how much that Cal cares what he says on the rest of this page / post .......................

Completely understand why he said it. Cal's comments seemed unnecessary to me.

Man, Pitino would have been crucified on here for that comment.:walk:

Poor choice of words. However what he was saying was definitely true. When he was at UMASS and Memphis it was harder to win, but was harder and just took more time like trying to carve a turkey with plastic forks and knives. At UK it was easier because you can jump right in and start winning. So I completely get what he was saying, even though I guess he could have said it differently or just not at all.

Laettner-esque.

Thought John Calipari had more tact that what was stated. What's the old saying? "Just because it's true doesn't make it right."(or right to say) :D

He should have thought this one out a little better before speaking...Have Memphis or UMass been relevant since he left?
