Yea its too bad, if you would include Scott, Brossart and SK in the 9th it would be a much deeper region. I think all 3 would easily be in the top 10 in the 9th

Holmes and CovCath can compete with the teams in Lexington and Louisville. They have been doing it all summer (and don't say that summer ball means nothing, because just like other teams have been playing shorthanded, Holmes hasn't always been with Jefferson, Rice, Edmonson, or Henderson at different times, and CovCath has played without Bovard and Brown).

Question for Brossart fans- will they have depth this year? I don't know very much about them. I know they return Uebel, Cooper, and Lubbers, but how many seniors did they lose? What about JV, did that team compare to the JV squad of 2 years ago?

True they were far from being favorites in the sweet 16, but they had the kid of team (Height, excellent guards, and a profilic scorer) that could succeed if things fell in place for them. I did not see a team like that last year, nor do I see one next year. One and done at Rupp will be the story for the 9th.

I think that the 9th is between the 5th-7th best region in the state, and with a decent draw, could get to Saturday. Then it would take a bit of luck, but its possible. This year, the top teams aren't anchored by one superstar that could really do damage to the 9th region teams (Ballard, LexCath, Male for example). Also in AAU, the Tar Heels always were right in the mix of things, more proof that they can compete. I'm not saying a 9th team will win it all, but both Holmes and CovCath have the pieces to go far- both have very experienced "superstars" (HHS- Jefferson, Rice, Hill, CCH- Jacobs, Bovard) along with talented players who are willing to play roles (HHS- Henderson, Avery, Nelson, CCH- Brown, Schult, Grimes, Bondick). And of course I'm leaving some players out from both teams. Lastly, the height of the state isn't as overwhelming as normal for the NKY kids- Coleman of Jtown, Pettigrew of Etown, Smith of South Laurel, ect. are good but not unusually tall or strong for the NKY kids to keep up with.

 

Although I will say that one disadvantage for the 9th is the depth of the region- there aren't any relatively easy trips to Rupp like it is for Warren Central in the 3rd or South Laurel in the 13th.

They should have nine seniors assuming everyone comes back. Kyle Luebbers actually graduated along with Adam Franzen and Brad Seiter. Brad was the starting point guard, with Adam & Kyle both starting several games or coming off the bench early to play valuable roles. G-Jimmy Uebel and C-Troy Cooper are joined by fellow seniors F/C-Nathan Mutsch and G-Josh Kidney as key contributors from last years varsity. Other seniors to-be are G-Matt Lloyd, G/F-Luke Rebholtz, G/F-Kyle Kramer, F/C-Matt Hansman, and G/F-Bryan Niemeyer; all who got extensive experience at the JV and varsity levels last year. Juniors expected to contribute on varsity are probably G-Ben Ridder and C-Greg Stortz, but they will probably see a lot of JV time as well.

 

The '05-06 JV obviously didn't match their '04-05 counterparts who finished 23-0, and won everything in sight. Juniors Uebel, Kidney, Mutsch and Cooper played only varsity last year, and they were the heart of the undefeated team, along with Franzen and Luebbers. The remaining cast did manage a 17-7 record against another fine schedule, and repeated as 37th district champs. The core of last year's JV's will all be seniors this year, so one would expect some depth on this squad.

 

The major questions would seem to be who steps up as the fifth starter and key reserves (I'd guess this could vary depending on who they play and if size is needed, speed, scoring, defense, etc.); and how they will react to losing floor general Seiter, and key contributors Luebbers and Franzen. They will have decent size with five players in the 6'4" to 6'6" range, and a couple of good sized guards in Kramer and Uebel. Should be well rounded, with some outside threats to go along with their traditionally strong inside game. Coach Code will demand his usual defensive excellence, but expect them to be a little more up-tempo than recent Mustang teams, as this senior bunch has traditionally run at every opportunity.

 

The '06-07 Mustangs will face another demanding schedule with trips to the Fifth Third Classic, the Bluegrass/Buckeye Classic, All-A district (and possibly region and state), and Mason County Invitational; along with traditional rivals NCC, Campbell County, CovCath, Holy Cross, Scott, Highlands, Mason, Pendleton and St. Henry. It will be interesting to see how the coaches fit together the new parts early on, and how these seniors will respond to being "the men"!! So far they've been pretty successful!!

Thanks for the info! BGP might as well use this as their pre-season analysis.

1. Holmes- The most talent by far in a very weak region

 

2. Brossart- Will be huge and unstopable inside,,,wil cuase match up problems

 

3. Cov Cath- Will have good young talent around some experianced veterans

 

4. Holy Cross- Jimmy Ryan will be a contender for player of the year

 

5.Dixie- We will finally get to see that "Exciting Junior Class" that has talked about for a couple of years.

 

6.Newcath- A good Senoir Big man will be great in a region that doesnt have many big men so Keirnan will have a field day next year.

 

7. Scott- how they are not in anyones top ten i dont know they return two starters and their 6 and 7 men from last year will be in the lineup this year.

 

8. Boone- Farris will be tough,,,and they have a good Sophmore class with some good Freshaman coming in including a 6"6 Freshaman

 

9. Highland- Willy will always have them playing good.

 

10. Ryle- cant think of anyone else

 

Ryle and St. Henry have to be ranked ahead of boone. Boone will not be ranked ahead of highlands either. Boone will struggle this year. St. Henry is bringing back one of the top players in Lenhof. They also bring back Keubbing who is proven starter and alot of young talent. They could be a suprise if they learn to get out and run more often. Also CovCath trasnfer Matt Garnick is coming out for the team, that could be the answer to the other scorer they are looking for. Rebounding will be the big question for the Crusaders.

Very weak region is the prediction that is a sure bet. The 9th a historically weak region will be worse than usual. None of these teams can even be thought of when discussing a state championship. Every so often the 9th has a team or 2 that have the potential to have some success at Rupp. Once again that is not in 06-07.

I think the top 3 teams in the 9th next year will be good enough to beat or compete with just about any team in the state. Austin Hill is a sleeper for 1st team all state.

You always seem to have intelligent posts and something good to say about other teams :thumb: But i totally agree with you. Holmes and Covcath both have enough athleticism to make up for a lack of size when and if they get down state.

 

Also remember this...Holmes hosts the 9th region this year.

Thats why CovCath is #1 until someone proves otherwise.

 

Covcath is #! simply because they won region last year and return 1 of the top 3 players in the region. Holmes undoubtedly has the better talent coming in this year, but IMO Covcath has to be #1 until Holmes or HC can get the monkey off their back and knock the Colonels off.

I hope your right. Quite a few people from NKY go to Rupp every year regardless of team affiliation. Would be nice to have a team from the 9th that does well.

I dont think people are really understanding how much CovCath is going to miss Tierney. I watched them play Simon Kenton last year and it was night and day when he wasnt in the game. I dont know who they have replacing him this year but their backup last year could hardly get the ball up the floor against Hester. They could really struggle if they dont have an answer for him leaving. Jacobs and Bovard are both great players but their best attributes are set shots. They can knock them down but somebody needs to set them up.
