Photo of children climbing on Vietnam Women’s Memorial goes viral

Featured Replies

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A photo that shows children climbing on The Vietnam Women’s Memorial has gone viral.

The nation’s capital has many sites that honor the service and sacrifice made by those who served our country. The Vietnam Women’s Memorial was dedicated to the women of the United States who served in the Vietnam War, most of whom were nurses.

Matthew Munson was visiting the memorial when some parents encouraged their children to climb on the memorial for a picture.

“There wasn’t a lot of people at this point,” Munson said. “Then a big group of people showed up just as the kids were treating the memorial more like a jungle gym and the parents were laughing. Then the veterans showed up, and they looked hurt more than angry. They were quiet.”

This is extremely disrespectful and the parents who let this happened should be ashamed.

Obviously the parents of these children have no idea....and now, the kids have no idea

Im sure the parents had no clue that was disrectful, and why should they know. With how our society is and what they are taught htey probably think its cool.

With how the world is today Im shocked they didnt let the kids pee on it.

Kids faces are blurred, so can not tell for sure - but they almost look like they are not American. If indeed that is the case I am surprised there is not a bigger uproar about this.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. In no way should this be a national story though.

OMG, for once I agree.

I bet my paycheck this isnt the first time a kid has got on this.

If they didn't want kids to climb on it, they shouldn't have put it out in the open and easily accessible. Kids are naturally going to climb on it. I'm not saying it's right or wrong; it is what it is.

I want the whole story. Very, very easily, the parents could have seen this just a little later and put a stop to it. These snapshots of moments without context irritate me to no-end. The internet is full of these. "These are kids on a statute, you will never believe what happened next..." Give the whole story.

Could use a "do not climb on statue/monument sign" I guess. I've been to DC and never saw anyone climb on any statue or monument. Don't think if I was in a foreign country I would climb on any statue or monument there. Kids are kids no matter where they are from. Parents should have done a better parenting job.

How could you tell from a photo that someone was not American?

While the parents may not have seen them or knew what was going on there are plenty of parents with the attitude that their little darling never do anything wrong. It's the monuments fault for being there.

I don't think it was done to be intentionally disrespectful but that doesn't mean that it wasn't.

Furriners just walk differently.

I had the opportunity to have a conversation with a veteran of the Army 3rd Infantry Regiment who had personally served guard at the Tomb Of The Unknowns. He said that even with the posted warnings and the verbal instructions given by the officers regarding appropriate behavior at the Tomb and during the Changing Of The Guard, there's still about 1 person every other month who has to be given a verbal warning by the guard walking the mat. There are probably a half dozen or more videos of various occasions of that happening on YouTube at any given time.

Like folks have stated already...what's going on in this picture is a shame, but it's pretty undoubtedly not the first time this has ever happened, and it's perfectly reasonable to assume that the parents of these kids were only 3 feet out of the frame as they were diving to grab their kids off of the statue.

Side Note: The citation and badge given to veterans having served as guards of the Tomb Of The Unknowns is one of the rarest citations awarded to Army vets...second only to the Army Astronaut badge, awarded only to Army vets who have been in space.

and....they take our jerbs
