March 9, 201511 yr Last year my daughter's school started an archery team in the NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program) program. She was in the 3rd grade and her first time picking up a bow. She did pretty good but was fairly inconsistent. This year she as really improved and consistently shoots high 250's in tournaments (shot a 277 in practice the other day, 300 being a perfect score). Anyway, there is a tournament every year called the class of the bluegrass. It is an invitational tournament and they only take the top 100 boys and 100 girls from each school division (elementary, middle, and high school) from the regional tournaments. So in NASP there are 14 regions across the state that have a regional tournament to qualify for the state tournament. They combine all the results from the regional tournaments and take the top 100. This year she finished 52nd out of 1419 girls. I was pretty proud of her.
March 9, 201511 yr Archery may be the fastest growing sport in Ky schools right now. We went to state and nationals last year and it's crazy how big it has gotten in the last 10 years or so.
March 9, 201511 yr I'd think if she could duplicate that 277 in competition she would move up pretty high in her grade. Great Job!
March 9, 201511 yr Author Archery may be the fastest growing sport in Ky schools right now. We went to state and nationals last year and it's crazy how big it has gotten in the last 10 years or so. Yep, it's huge. There are 4264 kids registered to shoot at state this year and that was with only 1 1/2 days of flight available. no telling how many they had to turn away or didn't qualify. There were 5 of the 14 regions that had over 1000 kids participate. Nationals is even bigger.
March 9, 201511 yr Author I'd think if she could duplicate that 277 in competition she would move up pretty high in her grade. Great Job! If she can do that Wednesday at state she will have a pretty good at a top ten. My guess is somewhere 280 will win it.
March 9, 201511 yr I'm confident I would hurt myself if I tried shooting a bow. :lol2: Good stuff, woods!

March 9, 201511 yr Well, I'm not allowed myself but if you come up to the Compound sometime, Mr. Cat will teach you! I'd like to learn someday. That's way more "sporty" than killing something with a gun, IMO.
