Bad choice of schools/teams to use in your scenario, considering the circumstances.

Wow! That is a shame. Glad to see the TSSAA lay down the law on both schools.

The coaches should have just "rested" the starters and played their worst players to get them some practice.

Did you guys that are ok with it watch the videos? You're ok with THAT?

 

I disagree with the professional sports comparisons. They are doing it to look out for their players. The Spurs are not tanking by resting players on the 2nd game of back-to-backs. The NFL does it when they have clinched playoff spots.

 

Besides, I think it's a horrible message to send to high school athletes.

One coach receives a two-game suspension to start next season. Likely, the other principle will follow suit. Ridiculous.

This part is unbelievable:

 

It was tanking that would make even the NBA’s most lottery-hungry teams blush. Smyrna Coach Shawn Middleton pulled his starters early in the game, and Riverdale Coach Cory Barrett followed suit. There was slow play, intentionally missed free throws and balls thrown away on purpose.

 

And it went beyond the players simply following orders, as they were active participants in all of it. The referee said that one Riverdale player gave him the three-second signal, demanding that she be called for the violation, and that one Smyrna player purposely tried to score in the wrong basket, only to be thwarted when she was whistled for a 10-second violation.

I find this scenario disgusting. Even if I had a coach, thankfully none of my coaches ever had such a thought, I would never had played to lose. One can look at at this game and see how it reflects the downward spiral of our nation, because too many have lost the incentive to be successful, even when the odds are against them. This game is symbolic of give everyone a trophy, it is never your fault or not accepting the consequences of your actions or let's have four or six divisions so everyone can have trophy.

Will the new 6A alignment in football for Jefferson County encourage (or at least cause consideration of) this sort of thing.

 

Finish 4th and your reward is a first round game at Trinity/Male/X (and yes I'm assuming that those are the only real contenders for championships in the 2 JeffCo. districts)

 

Finish 5th and your first round game is at SK/Ryle/Connor/Boone/Cooper/Campbell. If I'm Butler, PRP, J-Town, Seneca, Eastern, Ballard or Manual who do I have the better chance of beating?

Hilarious, but also sad that these coaches encouraged this. Maybe I'm in the minority or just crazy but I'm too competitive to ever want to lose a game.

NBA teams routinely tank games to get a better lottery pick...

The only problem with this game is that BOTH teams wanted to lose. That does not happen that often. Usually when an NBA team is tanking, the other team isn't so it does not look as bad.

I don't think it happens that much. First, that's why they have a lottery, the worst team rarely gets the #1 pick. Second, I think it's very difficult for a team that's 15-62 to get up for their last 5 games of the year. More human nature than tanking, although I have no idea what the 76ers are doing right now.
