Had we left Iraq with any ground support air power they probably could have protected themselves early on when ISIS was on the move in the desert. But Iraq was left with no air power when we left. An alternative would have been for the US to act unilaterally with air power and without any Washington gamesmenship to do the job for them. A justifiable 'imminent threat' could have been easy justification for defending a county just recently released from our direct protection. i.e. the same approach rationalized for Libya air support. That would have at least address the ISIS situation in Iraq early on - though not so much in Syria.

 

The question that remains is who is really behind ISIS? They did not gather around pubs getting free beer like the American colonists of the 1700s. Someone or some entity is backing them, arming them and supporting them. Iran? Al-Quada? Muslim Brotherhood? Others?

 

Part of the Iraq's problem was their own doing. The professional soldiers in Iraq were Sunni (Sadaam's boys) and as the Shiite government grew they pushed them out of the way in favor of "their" leaders who were not trained or experienced in fighting. The result was a poorly led and manned army to combat ISIS.

 

BTW, I got this from a person I know who was a trainer for the Iraqi military leadership. It made him sick to see what politics did to the military there.

He is asking because it is a Republican controlled Congress. If they grant it, they are the bad "war mongers", if they don't, they hate America.

There's really only one true fix for this, and it's got a few steps:

 

• Close the US borders completely — nobody gets in. Let's take the inscription off of the Statue of Liberty while we're at it.

 

• Totally divest from the Middle East. No US business there, and nobody from there can do business in the US.

 

• Economic sanctions or an all-out blockade for any other countries that do business with the Middle East.

 

• Go rogue. If anybody messes with the US, they get the Mossad treatment, to the highest levels.

 

• Deploy the G-Bomb at any and all opportunities, whether it's necessary or not. Bomber-loads of pig entrails, bowling balls, rusted-out ancient appliances and junk cars will get their attention and show that we're willing to out-crazy anybody. Let's reclaim our landfills and turn the Middle East into our junkyard. Frankly, I'm really sick and tired of the concept of the US "taking the high road" when dealing with terrorists. It just doesn't work.

 

We've given the people of the Middle East lots of chances to own their own future, and they've consistently taken a pass, whether out of fear or a condoning of what has taken over their land and religion. It's their sacrifice to make now. We've done enough.

I do agree that we shouldn't take the high road, but whatever we do we need to go after the adversary 100%, and destroy them. But only the people responsible. But on one hand we have people who claim that by us going after ISIS it's going to create more terrorist, sadly these people don't have a clue of what is going on. On the other had you have people mocking the president instead of rolling up their sleeves and saying we are in this together and lets destroy ISIS.

 

Lastly, it won't make a difference if we pull out of that part of the world, or the entire world outside of the USA, groups like ISIS would still hate us, and they will still come after us just for existing.

Difficult to say without knowing what entity created and backs ISIS.

 

ISIS is active in two countries - Iraq and Syria. Are either considered a 'vital US interest'?.

 

ISIS is conducting a proxy war on some entity or countries or leader's behalf. If the U.S. is to put any military personnel at risk for any operations the public has right to know who this is and the government - both administration and Congress have a duty to fully disclose who backs ISIS before taking this 'to the next level'.
