South Laurel Coach Steps down

I agree with MT and Slink. South needs to think really hard about this one.

This is not a move up for an experienced winning coach. A young energetic coach that has some head coaching experience would be a good selection. Either do that or hire an assistant that has zero experience. Chapell has the experience and is young and energetic. I would have to say give him an opportunity.

We can agree to disagree on this one. If he is named the coach, I will support him 110%. However, I just don't believe that he is the best fit for SL at this time based on his record.

1. None of the current or former SL assistants applied for the job.

2. Anybody who knows football in this part of the state knows it is almost impossible to win consistently at PCC. How many head coaches have they had?

3. The interviews have not been completed - that is the reason for the delay.

4. No final, official decision has been made as of yesterday.

5. Several people applied - some were head coaches, some were assistant coaches. The school can only choose among those that applied.

6. The AD, principal, assistant principals, assistant coaches, former head coach, teachers, and parent members of the council are all taking part in the selection process.

IF, and I mean IF, Jason Chappell is the next head coach, why is he such a poor choice, specifically? What are the names of the "hungry", "qualified", etc. assistant coaches that have applied for the job?

I like Chapel, and know that winning at PCC is not always the easiest. But when you take over a team that was 7-3 (0-1 playoffs) the year before, bring back 18 starters including a future D1 signee in QB Al Holland (Wake Forest), that I wouldn't have expected much of a dropoff. PCC's record has gone slowly downhill the past 3 seasons and having seen them, I know that they did have some talented kids on those teams. SL has never been an easy school to win consistently at either. With the exception of the Neal Warren years, they struggled off and on prior to Irwin's tenure. But now you have a program, on the rise, improving every year, and you want to replace him with a coach where the program has been heading the other direction? I am not trying to be mean here, I have never met Coach Chappell and he may be the best candidate and nicest guy. Just looking at track records, and when SL promoted Irwin from assistant coach to head coach, he proved that he could win. Since we aren't gonna pay a proven winning head coach the money it would take to come to Laurel County, we either take a young energetic head coach who has struggled somewhat, or a hungry energetic assistant coach. The last assistant that SL hired turned out to do a pretty good job. So much so, that he is getting a lot more money to be an OC at a 6A 'Bama school.

I will give you a name of a 'hungry, qualified' assistant who has applied and been interviewed, .... Mark Scenters, assistant coach from Madison Central is one of the candidates and I believe he could be a very good choice. I understand that he already has several for a potential staff ready to go and know that he is hungry to become a head coach, already knows the teams in the district very well. Just a thought!

I agree with you. I know Coach Scenters well. I think he'd be a good choice for South Laurel.

He comes from a program that has dominated this district for quite some time. I think they have only 1 loss in this district since the 2003 season. And BTW, that loss came to NL! (Sorry, had to throw that in!) ;)

This simply is not the case as I understand. The adminstration is only considering coaches with specific teaching certification where they have openings. So they are not choosing the best coaching candidate. Would they operate in this fashion if it were the head basketball coaching position? I think not.

Yes, they would have to keep ceritification in mind when choosing any coach - at least in Laurel Co. I don't know about other counties. The school cannot create teaching positions for new coaches when teachers in other schools are losing their jobs or being forced to transfer because of budget constraints.

Only one applicant had a certification that didn't fit, from what I heard.

That is good to hear! Sounds like they got some quality candidates.

Being in the same district as South Laurel, I am concerned on who they hire. From reading this thread I have to agree that the assistant from Madison Central would be a great hire, and the best fit for South Laural as far as football goes. What teaching positions are open at South?

SL should hire Scenters. He would definitely do a good job.
