South Laurel Coach Steps down

Are they going to anounce it today. I was talking to Tommy Reed on Wednesday and he said he was pretty sure it was going to be Chapell as head coach and the guy from MC as the d coach. What do you know.

I don't Coach Black would take the cut in pay. I did hear that someone from his staff may have applied, but this was not confirmed.

Coach Black would be a GREAT fit for South Laurel. He loves to throw the ball, he knows how to win, and he is a class act. We would love to have him in London, but don't see it happening.

Don't get me excited like that!

Is there really a drop in pay between Williamsburg and Laurel County. if that is the Case LC needs to get on the ball. No way a 1a school that is not priviate should be on a higher pay scale than a 4a county. They wonder why Jep would leave. I bet if the pay scale was different his decision would at least been harder for him to make.

I thought the date was the 19th @ 430pm unless it has been moved up. The word on the street for weeks has been that Chapell would be the next SL head coach. I had not heard anything about the coach from MC as the D coach. I know that SL lost their D coordinator with Brown leaving as well. Are you talking about Centers? I will have to check on that one.

I don't know what Coach Black makes at W-burg, but since nobody has snatched him up after all his success, they must be paying him enough for him to be content. I just know that we need to revisit what our coaches make in Laurel County. They deserve more for their sacrifices and time. Trust me on this one, the money is there.

The Laurel Co. system pays their coaches less than any other school system that I know of. I guess that is a large part of the reason that they have had approximately nine different coaching changes in the Laurel system over the last year or so.

I know of 1A schools who pay 33% more the their football head coaches than the Laurel County schools pay. The coaches looking at this job are not doing it just for the money, ... they wanna be a head coach. In fact, I know of assistants at smaller schools who make more money then the head coaches in Laurel County. It gives me even more respect for the time our coaches put in on behalf of the kids. Our kids deserve better.

I have it on good authority that coach from MC would not be interested in the D coordinator position if we are talking about the same coach.

Will they stay for an extended period of time or will they move on to a higher paying job after they get established as a quality head coach?

Hopefully, losing coaches as they have will send up a smoke signal to the administrators and the BOE that the salary structures MUST be revisited in order to remain competitive. Then they can hang on to more of these coaches. They have some solid ones in place all over the county, many of whom have no desire to leave as this is their home. However, they should be duly compensated for their time and efforts.

If this doesn't grab their attention, maybe a few cages need rattling! ;)

The announcement is next week.

Is this also a true statement about how South Laurel's basketball coach is paid as compared to our football coach(es) because I don't see him looking to move and he's been in place for 10+ years. Does Laurel County have a different pay scale for football coaches versus basketball?

All coaches are paid the same no matter the sport I believe.

At the same time it gets exhaustive doing the same work for less pay than other people. It brings a sense of being overlooked and taken advantage of. Steve Wright, won the Sweet 16 has been there a long time, what does he have to show for it? The same pay as a coach that may have won 2 games in another sport.

South Laurel is being, Laurel County for that matter is not going to get away with it much longer before their sports programs do spiral downwards because coaches are getting paid more and more out of state and surrounding counties that they pay.

Wright has tried to leave a few times over the years, most recently a few years ago he almost moved to Clark County. I believe he gets his pay supplemented by having a job that works more days than your average teacher.

I know of a 1A school just South of Laurel Co that pays 40% more for their coaches pay and it is not Williamsburg. I don't know what WB pays.

Ummmm … there's only one 1A school south of Laurel County, and that's Williamsburg, so color me confused by your sense of direction. Care to elaborate? The only other nearby 1A schools are Pineville (southeast) and Somerset (west).
