South Laurel Coach Steps down

Featured Replies

Ummmm … there's only one 1A school south of Laurel County, and that's Williamsburg, so color me confused by your sense of direction. Care to elaborate? The only other nearby 1A schools are Pineville (southeast) and Somerset (west).
Maybe he's talking about 1A Lynn Camp.....Surely Lynn Camp doesn't pay more that South Laurel. :creepy:

All coaches are paid the same no matter the sport I believe.
Actually, it's up to each individual school system what the supplement is for the various sports. At many places, the football and basketball coaches make the same amount and each other sport is on a lower scale.
Is this also a true statement about how South Laurel's basketball coach is paid as compared to our football coach(es) because I don't see him looking to move and he's been in place for 10+ years. Does Laurel County have a different pay scale for football coaches versus basketball?

The base rate pay is the same. However:

1. There are incremental increases for years coached in the system added to that rate and Wright is one of the most tenured coaches in Laurel County.

2. The job he has is running a program for the schools which deals with local businesses and helping to find the HS kids coop work. He works with kids at both high schools and, I am told, does a very good job at it. The pay rate is a little different for that position.

With these 2 things in place, he is probably the highest paid coach in the county, and rightly so.

To answer another question, I believe that the lower revenue sport coaches do not make the same rate as the higher revenue sports (basketball & football) for being head coaches.

However, the main issue is that a teacher/coach for a 4A school should make more than they are currently making in Laurel County. They shouldn't be paid less than teacher/coaches at much smaller schools as is the case. It's not a matter of not having the money, but how it is utilized. And this doesn't just apply to head coaches.

Oops, forgot about the Campers. :creepy:

I believe that Corbin pays the football, boy's and girl's basketball coaches the same percentage of their teaching pay, not necessarily the same dollar amount though. The coaches of the non-revenue producing sports are also paid a pct. of their teaching pay(maybe 1/2 what the revenue producing sports pay).

To add to this a little bit:

North Laurel is also looking to replace the girls soccer coach (Brandon Hibbard) AND the girls volleyball coach (Krenda Anders) who have both recently stepped down.

The AD's at North and South have their plates full in replacing so many coaches right now.

NORTH LAUREL: Volleyball, girls soccer, girls basketball

SOUTH LAUREL: Boys soccer, football

The girl's soccer coach at South Laurel also resigned, but I think that they have already named the current middle school as his replacement this fall.

On the flipside, rumor has it that SL may be getting a big OL moving to London this summer and he will be moving into the South district if he indeed moves to Laurel County as had been indicated. I cannot give out any more information, but this kid is a HOSS and could really help the Cardinals fill some holes on the offensive line due to graduation.

Should have more information in the coming weeks.

There is also a good chance that a BIG WR will be moving to London, reportedly within North Laurel's boundaries, but that does not necessarily stop him from attending South Laurel.

I had it in my column the other day that Kenna Williams is the new girls soccer coach at South...again. And, I had touched on all the vacancies North and South have.

Never has.

Sorry to here you are losing your coach. I have worked the chain gang for several years. Last year I worked one of your games, and I thought you had the most professional high school staffs I have been around. Good luck.

is there any moore information about players leaving (Qb) and going other places.

Have been told by various sources who should be "in the know" that Ricky Bowling is history and will follow Coach Irwin to Alabama. If he goes, I wish him the best but he may find - like some other current SL football players - that the grass is not always greener. To the current South players, I encourage you boys to stick together and be ONE. What you've been able to accomplish in the past few years through your hard work and dedication has resulted in a team who's earned the respect and support of many football fans here in Laurel County and outside our county. In two more days, the wait will be over, the new coach will be named and we can move on.

Great post!

Today is the day!!!! I certainly hope that there are no more delays, the new coach is announced, and the kids can move forward to continue building on what they have done the past 3 seasons! :thumb:
