Calls Refs Miss

Featured Replies

Back in the day you used to see the charge, basket good (ball left the shooter's hand before contact) call quite a bit.

But I haven't seen that called in years. Did the rules change?

The jump stop.

Refs really struggle with this!

Birdbrain, I think the point being made by ESPN is that the ball was in fact secured prior to the slide or during the slide if you will. The scenario I think was the player actually was in possession, prior to even hitting the floor, got tangled up during a drive, hit the floor (with ball in possession......dribble ceased) and then slid. In my book and/or eyes, that's a travel. Then again, I'm not a ref, but unless Clyde hasn't interpreted the way I just described it, then I defer to his judgement since he is in fact an official. If indeed what I just described is what Clyde is explaining, then it's just another :idunno:

The scenario you just gave would be a travel(most likely a foul). Having possession and then going to the floor is a travel unless they maintain their dribble until the land on the floor.

how? Clyde has already explained this in depth..

Clyde probably wasn't the referee in the games I've seen! Simple conclusion.

Loose ball situation, no one has clear possession, bench screams timeout and it is granted. Refs use to only grant T/O if one player had clear possession, has rule been changed or interpreted differently this year?

That is not the situation ESPN is upset about. If the player falls to the floor with the ball, it is traveling. ESPN is asking about a player who dives after a loose ball on the floor, gets hold of it and slides further after getting hold of the ball. ESPN thinks that should be traveling and it is not by rule.

Your scenario is always a travel even if there is no sliding. IF you take the ball all the way to the floor without losing possession it's a travel as soon as you hit.

It's still the college rule. Not sure how many years it's been since high school switched.

The only scenario a basket can count when there is a charge is if the shooter releases the ball AND comes back to the floor BEFORE charging. He's no longer a shooter when he returns to the floor which is why it would count.

No.

One thing to remember though. The decision to call/no call is made based on when the TO was requested. Sometimes there is possession when the official hears the request and then during the slight delay between recognition and whistle the ball comes loose. In that case the TO call is correct.

Refs in 8th region make a lot of bad calls, at Owen tonight was hard to bet refs and Anderson, pretty boy ref keeps. Looking at his kids in stands, and laughing with our tems

Clyde, I have a question about a play in the UK-Miss State women's game that just ended. (UK won 92-90 in double OT).

A UK player was called for a foul on a pick by a Bulldog player. You could hear the whistle and the players fell to the floor. The pass was still made, as the whistle sounded, to another Miss State player, who was about 10 feet from the foul, who then knocked down a 3 pointer. The refs allowed the 3 pointer to count and also awarded the player fouled on the pick to shoot a 1and bonus.

My question is, how can the 3 count if a foul has been called earlier 10 feet from the shooter? Seems to me like the first foul would create a dead ball and anything after that would be meaningless.

The shot would have to be released at the same time or before the foul to have the shot count.

Clyde, respect your answer, but I have seen numerous times clearly at no point was sole possession and timeout granted.

I didn't say it was always called correctly.
