Calls Refs Miss

Featured Replies

It occurs when incompetence is present. It is IMPOSSIBLE to be a block AND a charge at the same time. Common sense will tell you that.

Pay attention, chief. In the reply you quoted I said that it wouldn't happen if the officials would just wait a second before coming out with a call.

I wouldn't go as far to say "incompetence", but it is possible for two people, with two distinct angles, to see things differently...if you don't believe that, look around the stands in the next high school game you attend....everyone has a different angle and relationship to the play.

Let me clear. There is no "if that's the case."

So how would you make the rule work?

Pardon me for momentarily doubting your knowledge.

Very simple. I would say that just like in 95% of other cases, movement without dribbling is a travel. Slide on the floor with the ball should be ruled a travel. No different that rolling, standing, going to/from a knee, etc. Consistency.

Clyde, while everyone appreciates your input, sometimes you need to slow down a little and not take the questions and replies too personally. Those posting scenarios are simply looking for answers, and some of yours appear knowledgeable, but your response on occasion comes across as if you are irritated by the question.

We see it differently. I don't see it as being inconsistent. Pure physics makes it impossible to dive on the floor and not side. You can't be a lawn dart. The others you cite are all controllable actions.

So I don't see it as being inconsistent.

I truly appreciate your comments and approach. I'll go back and review my comments.

For the record I do not take anything personally unless you call me fat or ugly. Sometimes tone is hard to convey and I'm guilty of being curt occasionally.

So someone's minimum amount of post makes them less WORTHY of posting their opinion on this message board? Some new posters have actually been here longer than you. "Chief" per Clyde.

As the kids sing in church "all are welcome."

WHat about the bunny hop when a shooter catches the ball?

walk or not?

It's a travel if the shooter catches the ball with both feet on the ground and then does the 1-2 to get momentum going.

I defend the officials who make the right calls. However, if they screw up I also say it. The blarge call Jim posted is a perfect example. It should NEVER happen and it if does an official screwed up - which I said.

Come on man... I have no problem with the fact that you take up for the official first because judging by your vast knowledge of the rulebook, you probably are/were one and it's human nature to take up for your kind. But to say that you don't give the benefit of the doubt to the official, well, that's quite honestly simply not true. Again, not that I blame you, but it's not. If you don't know which side is the officials side, you get kinda wishy washy on it. Look at my question on the block/charge/falling early incident. It was 'probably'/'i'd have to see it' until Sandman fully answered the question.

Let me be clear in that I applaud you on your willingness to respond to questions like these and value your responses as I can see you have an understanding of the rule book from your many post. That was part of why I posted the questions in this thread to begin with. But you do give the officials the benefit of the doubt. Nothing wrong with that. Most people understand it. Just own it.

Show me where I went too far in defending an official. The example you cite is 100% a "have to see it."

Agreed. The most missed call I see is the travel that is called that isn't a travel.

The specific travel I'd say is missed the most is the spin move. It's almost always a travel but sometimes it happens so fast it's hard to tell.

The dreaded "blarge."

It occurs when one or both officials do not wait just a split second to make sure their partner hasn't already signaled. By rule you have to go with both. You can't pick. Both players get a foul. Ball goes back to the point of interruption. If the double foul happened while the shooter still possessed the ball the offense retains possession. If the contact happened after the ball was released you go to the arrow.

It probably happens more than you realize - unfortunately.

Here are 3 posts where I said refs screw up.

Like I said, I'll defend them when they get the real rule/call right and I'll say where they miss them.

What I won't do is say definitely when the posed question is vague.

It's a travel if the shooter catches the ball with both feet on the ground and then does the 1-2 to get momentum going.

It happens alot and is hardly called. It drives me nuts.
