For what it's worth, I believe Mike is undefeated against Kevin.

 

Pretty cool opportunity, however bittersweet it may be, for a family that loves basketball.

Has anyone ever mentioned on here how good James Bolden IS? WOW.

 

I can't even remember the 9 shots Walter says he missed tonight. I thought he was almost perfect. His crossover step back in the first half buckled the defense and drew a collective sigh from the stands. He hit a fall away jumper from the right baseline in the first half that was highlight material. He had a tip in late in the game when it was still a one possession game that was special.

 

Made Kendall fall on a nasty crossover...and all Kendall could do was get up and smile for the next minute or so.

Goofy me, I don't know why this interesting piece of trivia about the game hadn't occur to me.

Why are we trying to say how poor Holmes played? Maybe just maybe Highlands played pretty well last night. They did a good job of attacking Holmes pressure whether full court or half court. Making shots can go a long way in high school basketball. Consistency is a big issue with the Birds this year. Some statements I made earlier in the week after the Holy Cross game certainly proved themselves last night. The seniors led the way by their play on the court, best this team has shared the ball all year, the effort, heart and desire were unmatched. It was actually fun to watch them just go out and play the game of basketball the way it is meant to be played. 4 games to go and then the District tourney and then you never know. David did slay Goliath and the kids need to believe that they can 'compete' with anyone on any given night.

I need a pen & paper to track Kevin's coaching gigs, but I know Mike went 2-0 against Kevin in the '04 season when Mike was still at CCH & Kevin was at Boone. Kevin left for Colerain (I think), the next season. I believe this is the first season Mike has been a head coach while Kevin is back in NKY, so I believe this is their first season coaching against each other (as head coaches) since the 2004 season. Could be wrong, though.

Highlands did play hard last night. They didn't look like a team that lost to Bellevue.

 

Holmes came out and kind of went through the motions for the first 3 1/2 quarters. I honestly think they were a little surprised that Highlands was playing as well as they were. They ran some nice offensive sets that led to some easy baskets off back door cuts. When things got tight in the 4th quarter, Holmes finally amped up the pressure and turned things up.

 

Mullins makes a difference for Holmes at both ends and he was out once again last night...but Holmes beat Dixie without him so that shouldn't be an excuse. Coach L played 7 kids 12 or more minutes so the rotation was a little different than most nights.

 

Crazy stat....last night was just the 7th home game for Holmes this season and they only have one home game left. 8 regular season home games.

It was #12...unless he was laughing at his teammate.

Maybe Bellevue was a sort of wake up call?

Maybe Coach L lit a fire under them.?

Maybe they read the bgp thread about the Bellevue game?

 

I haven't been to all of their games, but the Bluebirds looked different last night.

They had that same look in their eyes as being down a few touchdowns in the 3rd. I hadn't seen that look on the court yet this season. They had it from the opening tip until about 2 mins left.

The BullDogs looked shocked at times. They obviously weren't expecting the Bluebirds that showed up.

 

Bolden tweaked his ankle early in 3rd and was favoring it at times. Guessing it wasn't too bad cause he had a heck of a game.

I don't think anyone who was there last night will say Holmes played well. I personally thought they looked bad then turned it on when they needed to, to put the Birds away the final 3 1/2 minutes.

 

Like you said though, Highlands did play well last night. i won't argue that. They were hitting shots and ran great sets to get easy looks around the basket. Coach L had the Dogs scouted well and knew what he could do to have success if the kids executed.

 

At the end of the day, Holmes' talent prevailed. They will need to play better against Boone Tuesday night and hopefully get Mullins back soon with the match up against the Breds next Friday night.

This is exactly how they played during the summer and quite honest I wish would have come much sooner this season. With an effort like that nobody would be talking about Bellevue. You ride a hot shooter, you trust teammates and run backdoor cuts, you move the ball which hasn't been done on so many occasions. A little role reversal the JV didn't distribute the ball got blown out, varsity plays excellent and is down two with 4 minutes to go. Basketball is an easy game when you don't get caught in the stat book. Congrats to the Seniors! I left the gym with a basketball buzz. Really enjoyed that game!!!!!

Bolden is just so smooth, he makes it look almost effortless.
