I am sure this would upset some people involved with the other sports programs at CovCath and possibly give someone motive to out Coach Wirth on the Roger Bacon application.

Look at the baseball and track teams- chock full of football players. Never saw any repercussions. Basketball a different animal- usually have quite a few Frosh playing both football and basketball for that year. After that the numbers dwindle due to cuts on the basketball side. IMO, if there is any group that puts more emphasis on playing their sport only it would be basketball - but that's only my humble opinion.

I will say the coaches like for their QB's to spend more time with them in the Spring and would probably prefer their linemen to spend their time lifting etc- but again, I never saw or heard any repercussions doing otherwise.

Agreed.

Coach Wirth was very clear about this issue with the players and parents from day one this season. He openly talked about the issue in the organizational meeting and encouraged the boys to play multiple sports. I believe his only request was for the players to communicate with their coaches regarding other sport commitments so they would know when not to expect them at football related off-season activities.

Simply my opinion- but I don't think the hoops coaches want their athletes playing anything but hoops. There's a small handful that play other sports- but not many I would bet. (Talking about Soph's thru Sr's here- I know there are more Frosh playing multiple sports than upperclassmen- that's pretty typical at every school).

This plays into the thread re: Urban Myers philosophy about taking multi sport athletes. I'd bet that

percentage wise nationally, there are a lot more football players playing multiple sports than basketball players playing multiple sports.

I'm only able to give firsthand insight to your original question in #64. I'm a big fan of the basketball program but am not involved enough to speak to the coach's desires in that regard.

What would be accomplished by Wirth of only having kids play football? Not really sure where that would come from. Basketball on the other hand I believe makes it pretty well known that football kids are not going to contribute much if at all. I believe the same type thing goes on at NCC as well.

If I follow everyone the problem at CovCath is with the basketball program not wanting basketball players playing other sports and if any of the other coaches have an issue with that then they are an Enemy of the State.

I don't buy the "it's the basketball program is the problem" talk. There were issues before the present staff was in place. Besides, what does the basketball program has to do with some of the "events" that involved Wirth?

 

If Wirth is applying for several open spots, it's obvious he wants to move on. Seems like he needs to be careful of who he can trust.

With Coach Wirth specifically? I'm not sure. With at least one coach? Absolutely yes. I know of a specific incident where a football player caught a bunch of flack from one of his offensive line coaches for missing a spring practice for a Track meet. In fact, the next day, the football player wasn't allowed to participate in football practice, because "he didn't want to be here."

 

That's the only incident that I know about though.

If that is true, then that's a "major" problem. Sorry but that can't happen if you want to be successful. A kid missing a "spring practice" for an in season sport means absolutely nothing in terms of development. Those coaches aren't that good!
