With coach Griff at Wayne Co. I define success different than most I guess, I think if you take over a program and you leave it in better shape than you found it to me that is successful. Did he win a state title there? No but he did teach them some football and left the program in much better shape than we he got there. And Thompson learned his ball from griff at Wayne Co. IMO success should be measured in different ways, you take over Trinity or BG and you dont win a state title in 3 or 4 years you haven't gotten the job done. But if you take over a program lets say that hasn't won a district title in 5 or 6 years and you win one in the 2nd year IMO that is doing a great job. Right, no matter how you slice the pie the Boone County schools are way behind and that is a direct reflection of the Boone County Board of Education.

 

Does anyone have insight on if the building of new schools hampered the BOE's decision to upgrade the athletic facilities in Boone County. In the past years, Boone was renovated and added on to,, Camp Ernst was built,, Cooper was built,, Ockerman renovated,,Longbranch Elementary was built,, does all that money come from the state or does the county have to chip in. My thinking is that all that expansion has to seriously limit the amount of funds available to upgrade the fields.

We are a little off topic here but Boone Co. does make significant local tax contribution just to stay ahead of their 'school facility' needs (much less athletic). They are a high growth district and have numerous unmet needs with regard to facilities despite adding taxes as permitted to address growth issues. Let's gain some perspective here; they have added two new high schools (large enrollment no less) in their district over the last 20 yrs. Think about that......doubling their previous existence! This has a huge impact on their financial outlook and their enrollment patterns. Let's face it Boone Co. HS is not the same make-up as it was prior to 93-94 (Ryle). I believe their BOE is very committed to providing everything to their students but sound fiscal responsibility lends to education needs first. This all leads to a diffferent dynamic all the way to their athletic facilities, football program/coach, etc.

 

Once a coveted, highly regarded positon & program, now.......not so much! Whoever grabs the helm, there will be hills to climb for success.

I believe both Boone and Conner are pretty land locked? Ryle seems to be the only campus with room for expansion. I wish Boone had looking into buying the former SOAS facility. It could of had additional classrooms and an indoor practice facility that could have been shared with the other schools.

I was just wondering what could be holding back the upgrade of the fields. I saw on another thread where both Southwestern and Pulaski were getting turf fields. However,, I'll get back on topic,, is there a front runner for the Boone position? Have they started interviewing? I have seen some previous posts that Coach Brown may not be ready.

Looks like plenty of space on the campus of Conner to me, Boone could have bought plenty of land around the high school and Ryle is almost unlimited. Building Cooper was stupid but I am sure the powers that be tell a story of how they had to do it blah blah blah.

 

And to think those same powers that be made Conner and Cooper move up to 6A. Might as well quit if you are the football coach at either school with administration like that.

There is no doubt this seriously limited what they could do with facilities. They have been building a school a year it seems like forever. Boone, Oldham,, Hardin and Bullitt counties all were growing at rates that they just had to build schools. This no doubt took attention away from athletic facilities. They have to follow Facility Plan that the state approves. I guarantee you with enrollment expanding, there was no way you could build a facility for sports and have overcrowded schools. Even if the Boone County BOE would have wanted to, they couldn't have.

 

Has that impacted BCHS football? I have no idea, but if upgrading facilities is the measure then yes school growth caused that.

 

In Kenton County, it was a whole different story. They renovated and added on to their high schools and they did not have to build near as many schools. Their growth rate wasn't near Boone's, therefore, because they were pushing upward were allowed to take the double nickel tax, same as Boone, without going to the voters. With the same availability of tax $$ and less growth, they could put things on their Facility Plan that did allow for sports facilities.

 

IMO Bone County has done a great job in handling the growth in a community, to say the least, is really adverse to taxes.

Not to get the thread off track, but those athletes a few years ago didn't go to Scott. They decided to go to other schools. Now that Scott is a viable option most are deciding to stay, and some even come in from out of district now.

 

With no open enrollment in Boone County, they at least get to hold on to their athletes.

 

While there is no open enrollment in Boone County plenty of people find a way. Look at how many brothers play for different schools. Some of them overlap and some of them have a gap of a couple of years but the family still has the same address. If you work for the school system then your child may go to any of the Boone County schools. Other people choose to have their child move to a grandparent's address or other relative Some choose their favorite parochial school. Some people move to a different school district after their child gets through elementary school. I cannot tell you how many times I have been asked if we were going to move to X school district. Boone does not have open enrollment, but where there is a will there is a way. So, does BCHS hang on to their athletes? Maybe, but they lose quite a few.

Well if they have added two new high schools then their tax base has had to increase dramatically. Look if you are going to have something like sports and band etc... why would you not want the best. The problem is most school systems half A there football programs. Boone Co. field is awful, they should have turf since it looks like to me they play soccer on it. And talking about the football program to quote the man that I am sure at night looks in the mirror and says "How great I am" Ricky Pitino "Shawn Alexander aint coming through that door".
