Wendell Ford Dies at Age 90

Featured Replies

My dad was with the KSP when Mr Ford was Governor. He had to escort him a few times when the Governor came to NKY.

Sad to hear, he had a great life though. I had some conversations with him you could feel that he was one of the good guys in politics, who cared about everyone.

Probably didn't agree with some of this views (too young to remember his views) but I bet I would have rather had him representing me than 90% of those in the Senate now.

Maybe the best Senator ever in Ky IMO

Probably would have to give Henry Clay the nod there, but Ford is in the top four along with Alben Barkley and John Sherman Cooper.

We are on opposite sides of the spectrum I guess but Bunning will always be high on my list. He is the reason Democrats don't dominate Kentucky anymore so his influence can't be neglected.

He was an icon.

Yep. We may not always agree with them, but yes - an icon.

Would you include Happy Chandler in this group? I don't know much about him, just know he was extremely influential I believe he came in second to Truman to be the Democratic Vice Presidential Nominee. Had he beat Truman, he would have become president at FDR's death.

Didn't Senator Ford rise to rank of being Minority/Majority Whip?

Yes. He was majority whip in the early 90s and minority whip in the second half of the decade after the Republican Revolution swept them to a majority in the '94 elections.

I don't think I've ever despised a politician more than I did Jim Bunning during the 2004 elections. My politics were certainly in a different place back when I was in college. That feeling of hatred was matched only by my disappointment in Daniel Mongiardo as a candidate, a trend among Democratic nominees for statewide posts to the present day.

With Chandler voting against anti-poll tax and anti-lynching legislation, it makes it tough for me to put him on that list. He was far more effective as a governor.
