The Best Ky. Mr. Basketball?

Featured Replies

Surely you're not saying that King cannot be considered for this since he was outplayed by a CONSENSUS top-5 ALL TIME NBA player. Right?

You've humbled me. How could I possibly compare a pro player to a non-pro player?

But that doesn't say much for the all-time pro players from Kentucky if the King isn't amongst their ranks.

I would think any list has to include Ritchie Farmer from Clay County.

Wes Unseld (I think) made the NBA's all-time team. While he's not at the Big O level (again, there's only 3 or 4 that are), that's still a nice coup for the commonwealth.

Chris Lofton (Mr. Basketball 04) isn't doing too bad at UT..........Griffith and Unseld weren't too shabby either........

Check the best all-time players from all 50 states and you will not find but a few that could hold Big O's jock much less compete with him on the court. Not a fair comparison at all.

I agree. I read somewhere that if assists were kept back when the Big O played like they are today, that he would be so far out in front of everyone that it would be unapproachable. When Oscar played you didn't record an assist unless the player was moving toward the basket and the passer threw him the ball which resulted in a score. I believe I am right about that. Today's assists are a little more liberal.

Lots of love for a Bearcat that never won a title... :D

1. Unseld.

2. Griffith.

3. Houston.

4. Chapman.

All four went on to solid careers in the NBA. I'm not sure how long "the King" played in the league. I bet it isn't close to any of these guys though.

That is hard to believe, the Bearcats not winning a title with him, but winning two after he graduated.

If he would have stayed healthy, there is no doubt in my mind that Charles Thomas would have been the best Mr. Basketball. I've watched a lot of basketball and the only players on the high school level that I saw better than Charles are...Lebron, Rondo (Oak Hill makes one look even better), and OJ Mayo. I honestly think Charles looked better than Lofton, Josh Smith (Oak Hill/Hawks), Telfair, Darius Washington, Stackhouse, and others.

If you were judging on pro career's you're right, the King can't hold a candle to these guys. This, however, is an award given to a High School player, and the King was a great high school player (not saying the others weren't) and can't be excluded based on what he didn't do at higher levels.

I agree.......I've seen a lot of guys dominate the high school level and then not exceed expectations at the college level.

Point being that for these players, shortcomings at the next level shouldn't take anything away from what they did in earlier years.

Lofton is probably not the best ever, but he certainly is worthy of being discussed.

Three state tournament appearances, a runner-up and a state title to cap off a tremendous HS career.

Don't forget, by the time he leave UT he will more than likely be a 3 time All-American. I

It would be nice if you could post a complete list of the past winners.

I'm not sure who I would vote for, but I know one name on that list that is truly unique. In 1975, Dom Fucci of Tates Creek was both Mr. Basketball and Mr. Baseball in the state - an accomplishment that no one else has been able to duplicate. VERY impressive, for my money...
