Beta Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Who do you think the best Mr. Basketball was? How about Jim McDaniels from 1967 coming out of Allen Co?
Frances Bavier Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Beta - It would be nice if you could post a complete list of the past winners. I'm not sure who I would vote for, but I know one name on that list that is truly unique. In 1975, Dom Fucci of Tates Creek was both Mr. Basketball and Mr. Baseball in the state - an accomplishment that no one else has been able to duplicate. VERY impressive, for my money... Frances
phenom Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 The best in my short memory is JR VanHoose. He was the best High School Basketball player I have seen from this state.

iPapi Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 man phenom, you're a youngster, aren't ya!? I'm not and VanHoose very well could be the best Mr. Basketball the state has had. What he did wasn't flashy, he wasn't extremely athletic, but the guy flat out dominated at the high school level. If you want to include what they did after high school, my pick is Wes Unseld ever so slightly over Allan Houston. But if we are just talking about high school and nothing more, then those guys make my Top 3, no doubt.
BigColonel Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 I'd say it's a 3 way race between Wes Unseld, Allan Houston, and Darrell Griffith.
Beta Posted April 3, 2006 Author Posted April 3, 2006 I'd say it's a 3 way race between Wes Unseld, Allan Houston, and Darrell Griffith. Wes Unseld had 26 rebounds - good point 1964 Jim McDaniels had 42 points, still holds that record too. 1967
Frances Bavier Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Well, I found the list at the following URL: http://www.khsaa.org/records/basketball/boysbkrecords.pdf It's on the bottom of page 10, but I can't copy and paste it, since it's in PDF format. Some pretty solid names on there. The 70's reads like an all-star team, even among this elite list. Oddly, Bill Bradley (of Ashland Holy Family fame) didn't make the list. He must have been nosed out in the voting by Wesley Cox of Louisville Male. Frances
jahearme Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Darrell Griffith Rex Chapman King Kelly Coleman That's a solid list.
Frances Bavier Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Well don't I have egg on my face... I checked the KHSAA recordbook for Baseball, and it would appear that the Mr. Baseball award didn't officially begin until the 1989 season (going to Tab Brown of St. X). It would appear that my earlier piece of trivia is not entirely accurate. I do remember Fucci being named the Player of the Year by the major newspapers in the big cities (Lexington Herald Leader, Louisville Courier Journal, Pineville Gazette, and the Bedford Bugle... My apologies to all that I offended. Frances
cshs81 Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 Let me tell you one that does not make the list: 1980 Ervin Stepp Please explain how Dicky Beal did not win.
$$East-Bank$$ Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 1.King Kelly Coleman 2.Ron King 3.Darrell Griffith 4.Jack Givens 5.JR VanHoose,Richie Farmer
cshs81 Posted April 3, 2006 Posted April 3, 2006 1.King Kelly Coleman From the standpoint of all-around domination by one player, he's it.
$$East-Bank$$ Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 From the standpoint of all-around domination by one player, he's it. No doubt about that.
