Well don't I have egg on my face...

I checked the KHSAA recordbook for Baseball, and it would appear that the Mr. Baseball award didn't officially begin until the 1989 season (going to Tab Brown of St. X).

It would appear that my earlier piece of trivia is not entirely accurate. I do remember Fucci being named the Player of the Year by the major newspapers in the big cities (Lexington Herald Leader, Louisville Courier Journal, Pineville Gazette, and the Bedford Bugle...

My apologies to all that I offended.

Frances

I assume you meant basketball, and I remember that Winston Bennett won it in 1983 so it has been around longer than 1989.

From everything that I have read and seen I would say

1. King Kelly Coleman

2. Darrell Griffith

No, I meant baseball. Fucci won the Mr. Basketball award in 1975, as I had stated, but according to the KHSAA record book, the first official "Mr. Baseball" award was given in 1989.

I was going by the KHSAA record book that is listed online. You may well be right, and the KHSAA simply hasn't listed anyone prior to 1956, when King Kelley Coleman won it.

Your a better man than me. I looked for a Mr. Basketball link on the KHSAA website and could not find it. Could you provide that link?

Click on the link in post #9. It will bring up a page, scroll to the bottom of page 10. Let me know if it doesn't work.

King Kelly Coleman was listed as the first for years. Some years ago a gentleman researched the games origins in Ky and its long standing stats.

He discovered that the award for years was "The star of stars" until 1954 when Vernon Hatton was named Mr. Basketball. The next year was Kenny Kuhn from Louisville Male and then The King in 1956. Interesting subject.

He doesn't qualify as he didn't win the award, but I think that Cliff Hagan could have if it was given out when he played. If he had I would put him in the discussion.

That's good enough for me, Beta. I'll bow to Vernon Hatton, and your date of 1954...

I vote for Darrell Griffith of Male High School.

Second choice is Wes Unseld of Seneca High School.

As far as King Kelly Coleman, I realize he is a legend and a great ball player, but when he played on the Kentucky All Star team that played Indiana twice after his senior season, he was took to school by Oscar Robertson. I would have to look it up, but I believe the Big O scored in the 30's both games and the King never made it to double digits.

Surely you're not saying that King cannot be considered for this since he was outplayed by a CONSENSUS top-5 ALL TIME NBA player. Right?

Who wouldn't have been took to school by the Big O?

Oscar Robertson is one of the Top 3 Players ever, IMO.

Also if you do your research, Coleman was injured in both of the Ky/Ind games that year. Yes the Big O certainly dominated but that does not diminish the career that Coleman had.
