I always thought reversing Paterno's wins was a strange reaction to the Sandusky mess. Did Penn St not win the games? Did they win the games using illegal players? How does "taking away" wins help solve anything?

 

I don't know, maybe as a warning to other institutions, and head coaches and staff who ignore what is happening, what would result if they fail to monitor people in their facilities who are raping 10 year old boys there? :idunno:

So you think a coach who is not going to monitor their facilities where boys are being raped is going to think "oh, they might take away my wins so I better do something about it"...

...and you are taking away wins from the players too, who did nothing wrong. It is something that makes people who are angry (and rightfully so) feel better but accomplishes absolutely nothing.

The fact the Paterno crew has fought so hard to have college football wins restored is all you need to know about this situation. Yes, I know it was a criminal act and a lot of innocent folks were harmed who should not have. But you are kidding yourself if you believe Joe Pa should be absolved of this. The culture he helped foster and wanted to be preserved allowed this to occur. The evidence is in today's ruling. PSU settles to payback to fight against sexual abuse, which is great, but also make it a priority to have wins restored. Seriously. We are talking about the rape of children and you want to throw that in as part of your settlement?

 

This case should always have been about the pursuit of the truth, not the unjust vilification of the culture of a great institution and the scapegoating of coaches, players players and administrators who were never given a chance to defend themselves.

Penn State is a freaking joke and this only helps cement it. Disgusting.

I certainly agree with re instating the wins. I didn't think that the wins were an issue in any of what went down at PSU, the players won those games "on the field" and that imo had nothing to do with the disgusting acts in the showers along with a lot more that has been documented.

As for the other sanctions I am mixed on that, the University, Athletic dept. all imo should pay the most severe sanctions possible. No way should PSU have any financial or scholarship penalties lifted. That's, to me like they are lessening what absolute sickness that was going on. Yes, that hurts the current players and coach that had nothing to do with it but the University, Athletic dept. should pay regardless. Tat coach and current players came to PSU knowing of sanctions so obviously they understood and wanted to be a part of the rebuilding or they wouldn't have went there.

A man testified in court in 2014 that Penn State football coach Joe Paterno ignored his complaints of a sexual assault committed by assistant coach Jerry Sandusky in 1976 when the man was a 14-year-old boy, according to new court documents unsealed Tuesday in a Philadelphia court.

The victim, who was identified in court records as John Doe 150, said that while he was attending a football camp at Penn State, Sandusky touched him as he showered. Sandusky’s finger penetrated the boy’s rectum, Doe testified in court in 2014, and the victim asked to speak with Paterno about it. Doe testified that he specifically told Paterno that Sandusky had sexually assaulted him, and Paterno ignored it.

“Is it accurate that Coach Paterno quickly said to you, ‘I don’t want to hear about any of that kind of stuff, I have a football season to worry about?'” the man’s lawyer asked him in 2014.

“Specifically. Yes … I was shocked, disappointed, offended. I was insulted… I said, is that all you’re going to do? You’re not going to do anything else?”

Paterno, the man testified, just walked away.

The wins shouldn't have been taken in the first place, because this situation was a criminal matter, not the NCAA's. Paterno didn't do enough, but he notified his boss (yes he had one) and his boss notified the head of police. The ball wasn't only dropped, but spiked somewhere along that line.

 

But that's for a judge to review, not the NCAA

Not really on point but did anyone else notice how much of a leading question that was? Boy, that would never be allowed on TV!

I again want to reiterate, the story is not that wins were restored, it is the fact that Penn State fought so hard to have wins restored in the hopes of absolving Paterno. That was a high priority for them.

If he did in fact say ‘I don’t want to hear about any of that kind of stuff, I have a football season to worry about?'...then what ever respect I had for him left is pretty much gone.

We'll never know since he died two years before this testimony.
