Michael Taylor: Garrard County, he has state records for most blocks in a game, and maybe the record for most blocks in a season. Teams couldn't get a shot off inside when he was in the paint.

 

Buddy Trumbo: Danville, I know every Guard hated going against him.(I did) You couldn't get the ball up court because he was so quick and strong. Mike Pittman the old Boyle Coach once said he was the best Defensive Player he's ever seen.

What year did Taylor play at Garrard? I remember that name. Buddy Trumbo was a pitbull on the defensive end. His strength and quickness helped him harass ball handlers. He could control a game with his ball pressure. IMO you have to put Boyle Co big man Colton Elkins at the top of the list or near the top. Best shot blocker and rim protector I've ever seen in high school basketball and I've Seen ALOT of basketball

Ever?? gonna have to think on this one for a while.

Region 1- This the best defensive player has to be Chris Vogt from Graves County. He has got to be averaging 5-6 blocks per game. If you bring the ball into the lane, you either have to alter your shot or it is getting swatted.

I moved to this area around 1998 and never got a chance to watch Buddy Trumbo play. I have gotten to know Buddy over the years in this area and I can say that without a doubt he is a tremendously great person and I am glad to know him. We talk about high school sports, especially basketball, a whole lot so for me this is really cool to see him appreciated at this level. He's one of the funniest cats I know as well.

 

 

Okay then, Buddy!!! I see you!!!!

As for an on ball defender, Allen Warford from Anderson County (2010) was as good as I've seen taking opposing point guards out of the game.

Three examples from the 2007 and 2008 (I think those years are right) where Arrez just ended guys careers at Rupp in embarrassing fashion. Slone, from Paintsvile, 4-13 from the floor, Samford, from Lex Cath, 3-10 from the floor, and Profit, from South Laurel, 4-15 from the floor.

 

He is the best old school man on man defender I have watched in high school.

Arrez was a great defender. Adding to your list, he brought the hammer down on Covington Catholic's guards in numerous big games during his career.

I'll say Buddy Trumbo in the 12th, too. Relentless. Those Danville teams in the late 90s were just missing one, true offensive weapon. Defensively, they were a nightmare, especially the 99-00 season. You had Trumbo, Jeremy Vaught, Olajuwon Buster (Mays), Josh Jaggers, etc who were all football players and they brought a lot of that to the hardwood. They were one legit, night in, night out scorer away from probably being the team that went to Rupp that year out of the 12th. For as good as they were defensively, lead by Trumbo, they were almost just as bad offensively....just no true scorer on that team.

Taylor played at Garrard from 1999-2001.

 

Was a force for sure. Forgot about him. The Mutumbo of the 12th those couple years. Get that mess out of here...

Nathan Sexton of the 5th Region who was on Etowns 2000 State Title team who went onto have a nice career at Bellarmine was tough. 6'5 or so and went to battle every night.

 

Dennis Johnson of Harrodsburg in the 12th, 95-98. Enough said.

 

Joe Sykes of North Hardin, 6'8..96-98. Went onto have a nice career at Louisiana Tech I believe.

Dicky Beal----Covington Holmes.

 

He could lock down because he had the fastest foot and hand speed I ever saw. Just a tremendous defender.
