December 28, 201411 yr Thought provoking. https://www.yahoo.com/parenting/7-things-i-can-do-that-my-black-son-cant-99408985077.html
December 28, 201411 yr My son and I just had a discussion about this Christmas Eve. He's white, but I was so proud of him for his consciousness of the advantages he enjoys. He admitted that only recently did he fully understand that things he takes for granted were struggles for other people. This article outines some of those he mentioned.
December 28, 201411 yr Saw this article this morning, found it interesting, and almost posted it myself. Glad to see that you were on the same page and beat me to it. It says a mouthful.
December 28, 201411 yr Excellent article. So many times the term "race card" comes up when someone that is black brings up an issue. Does that mean that they can never discuss racial issues without the accusation of "race card"? Surely sometimes they must be right?

Does that mean that they can never discuss racial issues without the accusation of "race card"? Surely sometimes they must be right? I don't disagree with what you are saying...I really don't. However, white people are often afraid to bring up racial things too for fear of being labeled as well.
December 28, 201411 yr Anyone who wants to boil this down to "racism" is ignoring the larger message. Whites can and do enjoy the freedom to exist, go places, get jobs, etc without someone questioning their ability to be, to achieve, without an assumption of either ill intent or achievement only with assistance. Think about it...how many times have the assumptions that black families can't afford to send their kids to a private school been made? It may not be overtly stated. It's masked in the "that kid lives in "x" neighborhood, he must only be there for "y" sport. People try to disguise it. Heck, they may not even be aware they are doing it....but it is there. When a white kid like my son winds up at Trinity, despite my financial situation, no one assumes anyone is helping make it happen.

Sounds a lot like the White Privilege theory being pushed in college which I can't support.

December 28, 201411 yr I'm not buying these extreme take I'm 2014 . Sounds a lot like the White Privilege theory being pushed in college which I can't support. Why do you think that this is extreme? What in your experience shows that this is wrong?
December 28, 201411 yr Why do you think that this is extreme? What in your experience shows that this is wrong? I've grown up with friends and peers of all ethnicities. The color of your skin does not hold you back in 2014 from success. Trying to drub things that were much more common in the 1970s and act like they are common today does nothing to further any discussion. I stand by what I've stated in many threads that this should be a mostly socioeconomic discussion in 2014 . There are many gripes the black community has that I agree with and support to want to fix. But these sociology theories of the mindset of white Americans and unconscious behaviors meant to be more divisive than inclusive don't do anything for a discussion in 2014 . These mindsets decrease with every generation and in 2014 these "7 things" they happen as an exception today not the rule . If we want to have a serious discussion let's have it on how we can fix socioeconomic discrepancies in a free country for people of all races.

I do agree that a lot of the issues are socioeconomic ones and, with that, minorities are more likely to be poor. What about these? 3. I Learned About My Ancestors’ History in School 4.
