Daniel Ramser leads No. 1 Trinity over No. 8 Covington Catholic

 

In its first test of the season against a ranked opponent, the Trinity High School basketball team endured some anxious moments early before pulling away.

 

Daniel Ramser scored 17 points and Jax Levitch added 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds as the host Shamrocks beat defending state champion Covington Catholic 60-49 on Friday in a matchup of top-10 teams in The Courier-Journal’s preseason poll of coaches.

 

Trinity had to go with a small lineup for much of the second quarter, as 6-foot-10 University of Louisville signee Raymond Spalding twisted an ankle and 6-5 Marshall signee Christian Thieneman went out with two fouls.

 

The Colonels led by four points late in the first half before the Shamrocks regrouped.

Game will be very close. Keys IMO:

 

CovCath: CVH ability to create shot and get to the line. Schuh has to stay on the floor. Romes must be a beast

 

Trinity: production from the 2.3.4

CVH had 16 pts but nine were in the first quarter and a 3pt at the end of the game so bascially only 4 pts after the first qtr. Bo had 9 and played just okay. Romes was not a factor

Heard the Freshman game went to CCH by 20 and the JV game was Trinity by 10.

CCH has a very nice group of frosh.

I'm assuming you're talking about the offensive end. Much like last year its hard to "assert yourself" when you're posting hard and always calling for it and all you get is a ball fake.

 

I hope that no one on the team is listening to you. They need to run the offense the COACH gives them and take the shots available in that offense. It isn't about showcasing one player. If by posting hard Ray can draw the defense and get other guys open, he is doing a great job.

If he's posting and he is open, they should give him the ball. If he is a good player, he'll make good decisions, take it to the hole or kick it for an open look.

I never said he wasn't doing a good job or saying they should do something one way or the other. I was responding to a post saying he doesn't assert himself.

I also really do not understand the pervasive mentality that HS coaches shouldn't be criticized or held accountable for being a bad coach. I'm not saying the Trinity coach is bad... to be honest, I know nothing about him, but I see a lot of folks who don't think its OK to take a bad HS coach to task. Just because a guy has the title of "Head Coach" at the HS level does not mean they know what they are doing. I can point to some college and NBA coaches who are in over their heads, so you better believe that there are a fair share of HS coaches who are not getting the job done.

 

Again, just to be clear, this is not directed at any one coach in particular... but rather, the attitude that a lot of fans have that HS coaches shouldn't be criticized, or better yet... HELD ACCOUNTABLE for the job they are paid to do.

Really, I can't make myself any more clear, but I will try. You stated that you recognize bad coaches,, what is the difference between a good or bad coach, I have seen what I thought were bad coaches, they have kept their jobs for years, Most all coaches are like me and you, they all have different thoughts and views,,I guess if you don't see eye to eye with them that makes them bad coaches..

Well, Danny... first, I never said that "I recognize bad coaches."

 

My point was apparently hard for you to grasp... which was, "why do most folks feel its not OK to question, or criticize a HS head coach?"

 

Its funny, there is a mechanism in place for coaches to critique Refs every season. Why can't parents and players be afforded a similar evaluation mechanism? When I teach a college course, each and every one of my students gets to evaluate my performance at the end of the semester. Most professions do.

 

And just because a High School coach "keeps his job for years" does not necessarily mean they are doing a good job.
