Do you consider the difficulty (or easiness) of the schedule the player's team played?

 

Is it a requirement for the player's team to make it to the Sweet 16?

I went back and looked at some past winners... I won't single anyone out, but there are more than several who were not "the best player" in the state of KY the year they won.

I don't mean to in any way diminish Drew McDonald's abilities or accomplishments, but I think the fact that he is going to NKU will hurt his chances of winning Mr. Basketball. I think it is totally unfair, but unfortunately some will see that as an indication that he may not be as good as others going elsewhere. Again, totally unfair. But I don't have a vote.

 

Of all the comments made on this thread, this (and the one about JP's Ballard team beating McDonald's) has to be the one holding the least amount of credibility. To be honest, I applaud McDonald's choice of NKU. He chose the best fit for him and didn't get caught up in going to the "biggest" or "most reputable in terms of basketball programs."

Politics and name recognition go a long way. Had voting been held after the Sweet 16 last year Nick Ruthsatz would have won it. Deservedly so, I'll add.

My vote would go for Perry right now. I am a little biased towards 2nd region and think Matlock and Simmons should be in the conversation. I would almost argue that Matlock is the most valuable player to his team in the state. Hoptown would not be near as good without him, where as a lot of these other guys mentioned have good players around them.

 

I do have to give a shout out to sophomore Travion Hollowell from UHA, good Lord he is avg 29.8 ppg (6.4 rpg). He will be in the this conversation in 24 months.

You're still looking at things with a narrow view if you don't think that committing to a "sexier" school doesn't sway some who have votes. This thread is "Who will win Mr. Basketball in 2015"? Not one person has said Drew isn't deserving or that he shouldn't get it. When people point out reasons why it will be harder for him to get it than others you don't have to believe it. That's fine. We've seen this movie play out over and over and over again in many decades of KY High School basketball.

 

If the award was given out today Cam Justice would be the winner.

No,, the voting is done prior to the Sweet 16.. That way a kid that does ok throughout the season can't blow up at state to win it.

:lol: I'm all good. He's not deserving of it right now, so I'm all for someone else winning it. That's not to say he won't rebound in the rest of the season but as of now, he doesn't deserve it. I wouldn't mind Sutton or Perry winning.

Matt Rose has been outstanding so far this season.

 

Matt Rose is the best "all-around" player in the state this year which is why I believe he should be Mr. Basketball. At 6'7" and 200 lbs., he is equally adept at playing on the perimeter or with his back to the basket. He plays the 2 thru 5 positions very well and has even played the point for Lexington Christian at times on a limited basis this year. He can guard the small guys on the perimeter and he can also catch the lob and finish with a dunk. He is a better shooter than the bigs and he rebounds better than the guards.

 

He does not always have to have the ball in his hands to be effective and he has the size for rebounding that Justice and Bolden lack. While both are great shooters, Rose is quicker and has more athletic ability than McDonald. He is a much better and more consistent shooter than Sutton, Perry or Matlock. He is a legit 3-point weapon playing the 5, unlike Spalding and Holman. Rose also has a greater upside than the others as he will be enrolled and playing basketball in college next summer while still only being 17 years old.

 

While most of LCA's games are played against teams from Lexington or the 11th Region, LCA has played 2 games so far this year against the teams of other players mentioned as potential Mr. Basketball candidates. In those games, Rose went for 25 & 7 against Trinity and 21 & 8 against Manual, posting better numbers than both Spalding and Sutton.

 

While his stats are comparable to or better than the other contenders for Mr. Basketball, his versatility is unmatched by any of them, which is why Matt Rose should be Mr. Basketball in Kentucky this year.
