Was the decision a matter of "politics?" Maybe. It happens in a lot of regions with players that have transferred or play for a certain school and/or exhibit questionable attitude or behavior.

 

Regardless of the vote, Faulkner got the last laugh ... she was playing on Saturday night.

 

Westsider, I understand where your coming from but if Kala didn't get the votes because people were upset over her transfer then shame on the adults involved. She paid her penalty. She sat out an entire year of athletic competition that she can never get back. If people felt that Raybourne was the better player then fine but if this was a backlash over her transfer then that is sad.

 

On the other hand the boys winner resides at the Ramey Home. I guess the same criteria wasn't used to decide the boys winner.

I think the 12th was the girl from Mercer County. Goodman I think was her name. I know the coach was Pyles from Wayne County.

Let me get my 2cents worth. I have been a member of the KABC in the past and have voted in the POY and COY awards. I'm currently not a member of the KABC. I was always under the impression that a KABC member in good standing (dues paid) had the right to vote for any player or coach in their respected region, regardless if the coach at that school was a member of KABC or not. In the past I have voted for coaches that were not members of the KABC and on 1 instance, that non member coach won the COY. Now, things may have changed from when I was a member, but anyone that coaches at the elementary, middle, or high school level in any capacity can become a member of the KABC. The ballots ask for the member coach to vote for the POY and COY in their region. As for Rose Hill and the Faulkner girls, you girls play some great ball. I'm just honored that we can say that we beat you guys this season. The girls and the fans are top notch. A very respectful and nice group. I'm glad that you guys got to play in the "Ship" at the state tourney against Lexington Catholic. Congrats. Hope that I have helped, if I have confused you more than you already were, sorry.

I dont think anyone on here that didnt agree with the results would refute your statement.

The question most have (who disagree) is why and with what criteria. Especially when you look at a senior who led the region in points and assists on the best team in the region.

IMO the ones who didnt vote for Kala having the explaining to do and not to hide behind some fascade they have constructed which makes them feel better .

However ,you will never hear it because I think they were trying to send a message but all they did was cheapen the award in the process

Honest Abe is correct in saying that KABC membership is not required to receive votes for either player of the year or coach of the year.

 

I emailed Kerry Stovall, Christian County Boys Basketball Coach and President of the KABC. According to Mr. Stovall, and I quote:

 

No rules have been set up to prevent a coach or a player from receiving these awards. We have had some selected that have not been in good standing (as you say)and some in good standing that have been recognized for their accomplishments and talent.

 

By in good standing, he means whether or not dues have been paid.

Personal slant? I don't have a dog in this fight, just trying to help discussion of the process. If you can't handle that, tough.

 

My post was based on personal experience, based on a situation that occurred in the region in which I live a few years ago. If that's supposition and hearsay, then I guess I need to re-educate myself on what those terms mean.

BTW sitting out one year and scoring 2500 is pretty good.
