So then it is the leadership of the head coach? Don't know what other conclusions can be drawn.

Perhaps they need to modernize their thinking? A lot of very "experienced" coaches on that sideline. Time for some new blood maybe, ones that understand how to defend the pass?

The ratio of run to pass plays is far less important than the situation of when you use one or the other.

I don't think BW issue is coaching. They have some very good guys on that sideline.

Actually it was VOR and his lack of awareness regarding our play calling ...

I spent a few minutes running the numbers on our season ... against teams that were "solid" to "great". (aka--Teams that VOR has mentioned this season: Mount Healthy, Dixie, Franklin County, Cov Cath, NCC, Frankfort, Mayfield)

Total Offensive Plays (NOTHING EXCLUDED): 341

Total Runs: 203 (60%)

Total Passes: 138 (40%)

Heck ... here are a few more numbers for the sake of conversation ... we broke down 269 plays of the Mayfield offense ...

Run: 197 (73.23%)

Pass: 72 (26.77%)

(We don't break down plays against blowout efforts--so the numbers are solid comparisons)

Against Mayfield:

Total Offensive Plays: 61

Total Runs: 40 (66%)

Total Passes: 21 (34%)

Total Runs for a Loss and Yards: 3 for -4 yards

Total Passes for a Loss and Yards: 2 for -14 yards

Naturally the last few days have been hell ... but when I look back on what cost us the game last week--it was not the offense and it most definitely WAS NOT the play calling.

Based on the numbers above (and the fact that the Mayfield fans have been pretty upfront about the fact that running the ball has been their bread and butter) ... it was our inability to get a stop on defense. We did a good job against the run .. we did not do such a great job against the pass.

Now--if I had a dollar for every time a Mayfield fan said that we would struggle running against the Mayfield defense. Well ... guess what ... based on the numbers above ... it sure looks like our offensive coaches were 100% squared away with their game plan (pretty sure they got it right all year as well).

So ... if you are going to question coaching (our fans) then maybe you need to fire away at the defense. So fire away at good ole' quickslick.

At the end of the day:

*Two exceptional small school football programs met in the semi-finals

*One team won

*One team lost

*Both teams had success and failures

*All the kids played as hard as they could

*Whether I like it or not ... or agree or disagree ... the better team won.

From there ... I am out ... I am taking my ball ... and going home and putting the football clothes away--and unpacking the track and field costumes.

Good luck to the Cards against Williamsburg.

I hope that we can find a way to keep a series going with the Cardinals.

While facts are facts, I think the sequence to me was puzzling, easy for a arm chair qb to say after the fact, but BW started out heavy run, as expected and like in the past got away from that in the 3rd Q with plenty of time left and several arm chair QB Cards fans in the stands felt it was a BW mistake, me being one. We had not stopped the BW ground game for the most part other than goal line stands and had BW stayed with that it would have been harder for the Cards to win. I think but like I said its easy to be a second guessing arm chair QB

Why wouldn't BW go run. That rolled over all 1a teams and a good Cc team with that game Plan. Teams play to their strength. I'm sure the staff thought they could out physical MF.

My guess is they lost their running back to a concussion. Studer is very good, but he was desperately needed on D as well, and I think the coaches realized after he got hurt that he is not a kid that can carry it 25 times and play D also. Pound for pound toughest kid I know, but eventually being 5'9 q150 ish catches up to you. Stringer had carried it 16 times in a quarter and a half, and once he went out my guess is that changed their plan.

Fair enough. I saw 3 games this year, and the defense got cooked through the air in all 3. Corners playing way to tight, couldn't keep receivers in front of them. That has to fall on a coaching staff somewhere.

So the kids playing don't take responsibility for what happens?? Sometime the other team just has better players!

Does anyone have an opinion on whether all of the talented BW Juniors will be back for their Senior football season. I am not spreading anything (that is contagious anyway) or trying to stir the pot. I am referring to the group whose meal ticket into D1 is through baseball. Was Stringer's injury Friday a concussion? If so, does he risk a scholarship to Louisville to play baseball? Does Combs risk his opportunity with UK baseball? Most pundits have Slusher tagged for D1 baseball as well. And, possibly Fieger? Or, with MF out of the way, do they seize the opportunity for one last shot at a 1A ring?

I believe that they will all return for the Senior year with FINISHING on their mind. This group of Juniors were apart of a Freshman Championship, 2 regional championships (frosh and this year), District Championship team last year, and are primed to complete the "full house" with a State title next year as Seniors.

Sure, but isnt it up to coaches to put them in the best position to succeed? They were doing what they were coached to do, just didn't have the ability to execute. Eventually play off and keep them in front. The lost to Mt Healthy because they refused to adjust and continued to play press coverage with no help over the top on a far superior athlete. At then end of first half vs Dixie they were still pressing, two slightly overthrown balls kept them from icing it by half. Same thing vs MF. I've been critical of scheme for two years, too complicated and puts way too much pressure on LB position.

I have thought for years, as I am sure you know, that this is the issue. How to fix is complicated. I came to the conclusion that Rash needs to bring in outside help. The current staff for starters has never really even attempted to be balanced but even when they do pass it is not fluid. I think an assistant that has been successful with the spread will fix it and more balanced play calling

I agree with many of the points made....simplification is the key....the passing game has to be a part of the offense, they have had the weapons and will have some next year. I believe that you need to work towards your strengths....mold the offense to what you do best. I think Fieger is best when rolling out or in a moving pocket with quick releases...JMO. It just seemed to long and drawn out at times with the route tree's....more balanced play calling is also a key. I think they did a great job this year vs. last year in the play calling. Post #78 says some more....

Someone had said the same coaching staff that is currently there is the same for when Yeagle was there, wrong! Just one is the same and he came later. Totally different coaching staff.

The Dixie game wasn't close. No coaching would have changed that.

Beechwood (during the last 3-4 years that I have closely followed them) relies on pressure up front on the QB to maximize their pass defense...they have always struggled in the secondary. Not sure if it is the "horses" or coaching in that regard....I also agree that things need to be simplified. Seems like too much thinking going on pre snap at times. As far as the Dixie game goes...I believe that adjustments were made...bottom line is that Dixie flat out beat up Beechwoods defense that night. Dixies size, strength and speed at the QB position had them off balance all night.

Late to this thread. Saw BW play 5 times including the Mayfield and came away with a few constructive thoughts. I like the QB's athletic abilities...good arm, quick legs...but, felt he needed work on his reads. Slow to recognize what he was seeing and it resulted in two major interceptions. I asked myself why? Suspect he is bright and can't imagine the coaching staff not putting in the film time with him. To me the offensive co-ordinator has to become current with his in-game sideline communication to the QB. Currently, the QB must run over to the sideline between each and every play, get instructions, run back to the huddle, call the play, do a check with me when they get to the line, and then execute. A major over kill of micro-managing from a former D1 quarterback, offensive co-ordinator. The QB probably runs an extra mile plus per game in full gear. The time delays sucked the momentum out of BW and gave Mayfield ample time to regroup. (i.e. Goal line series in early first quarter.). I don't know when the QB gets the chance to analyze what is happening out there and how to solve it, and how to react to what might happen. He's running his butt off just trying to remember the call, get back to the team and get the play off before delay of game. No problem with OC's knowledge and play calling, but think he needs to inject a current signal system that would allow the QB to grow and produce at the highest levels his talents allow.
