It seems to me that Louisville is only claimed by much of the rest of the state on the first Saturday in May.

This isn't fair. The Ville is on an unlevel playing field due to open enrollment. We should have 2 state tournaments. Kenton County vs. Jefferson County and everyone else. Right????????? ;)

Just for the record, I was headed home until Apollo pulled the upset.

Maybe it had to do with Louisville, but isn't it also true that traditionally State Tournament crowds tend to root for the underdog once their team has been eliminated. Clearly Grave and Apollo were considered the underdogs in this game. Isn't that why everyone thinks the Sweet Sixteen is so great, and doesn't want to concede to classification in Basketball. Everyone is hoping for another Cuba or Carr Creek. Right.

Wasn't that way in 2003 when #1 Mason played a Final 8 game into three overtimes? Mason was the favorite not only to win the game, but win the tourney. Since the game went into overtimes, the other fans for the next game had arrived. It was truly an eye-opener when the majority of the fans in the arena were cheering against the underdog.

I would've preferred an all-Louisville final ...two talented top-10 teams from the same city, playing each other for the first time this season with a state title on the line. It would've been an intense, intriguing matchup.

I was not going to the game tonight regardless of who was playing but I did go to the session this morning. During the Apollo/PRP game I heard several people say that if PRP won the 2nd game that they would not be attending the championship game to watch two Louisville teams play. I like to see regions 13-16 do good and I have found myself rooting for the 11th region a lot lately also. Besides that I could care less what teams are playing for the title.

You have some good points.

I wonder if a smaller Louisville school, such as Brown or DeSales, were playing in the state tournament, would it make a difference in the neutral fan support?

I too have noticed the bias against Louisville schools at Rupp, and I've caught myself doing it in the past. But if it's just because many of Jefferson County's schools have large enrollments, then that is a poor reason imo. Jefferson County is in KENTUCKY. Their schools are no different from any other school in the state. If one of their schools have 1700 students, how could that be any different from schools like Madison Central, Clark County, Scott County, etc, who have similar enrollments?

Jeffersontown had a great team this year, as they did last year. Congratulations to these Kentucky kids on their state championship. :thumb:

Professor, I understand what you are saying, however, I would assume that the majority of the people in attendance really don't know much about the schools that are located in a different part of the state. Just look at some of the recent comments on this board where some have stated that they thought Apollo was a private school, located in Louisville, and even that it was 1A. I was fairly surprised to see these comments, as I thought being the alma mater of Rex Champman, that more people would at least know where the school was located.

 

I think that many of these same fans, have a preception that Louisville High Schools are all very large, when the reality of the situation is that most of the schools are on par or even below the enrollments of several of the rural county high schools. To be honest, I consider myself a big high school sports fan, but outside of T, X, H, I really don't know much about Jefferson Co. schools. I have heard of Senneca, Iroquois, etc, put that is about it.
