The Cov-Cath coaches are good enough to make adjustments to win the game. Is nine in the box enough to slow down the JC rushing attack? We will know soon enough. Cov Cath wins.

I have seen both teams play this year, so I'm going with JC by 14.

I can't understand why Johnson Central does not find someone to play who will help prepare them for games against teams such as Cov Cath & Highlands?

 

1. Can they not find anyone or do they really not try very hard?

2. How many good passing teams do they face in the regular season to expose their weaknesses before they playoffs?

3. Do they play any teams with strong run defenses that force them out of their comfort zone in the regular season?

Johnson Central's strength has never lied much in their passing game. Might be coaching, might be what athletes are available, probably is a combination of the two. That being said, I think Johnson Central has fared pretty well against Cov Cath and Highlands since they started seeing them in the second round. They're 3-2 against Cov Cath, and although they've not beaten Highlands yet, they've been within two touchdowns with Highlands on three of four occasions now.

Earlier in the season, stopping the run was a big issue. As of late though, Colonels have seemed to clean up tackling, and get a consistent push from defensive line, which in turn, has allowed linebackers, JRs Cam Pitzer, Lucas Timmerman, and SO Alex Shelton to have some quality last few games.

 

Speaking of D line, I have noticed that the Colonels have showed some packages with 4 and 5 down lineman with some walked up ends, which as much as I know, is unorthodox to the Colonels base defense 3-3.

 

Stopping the run is far from perfect but it's come along way. Adding more DLinemen and in my opinion, having Shelton at middle backer is the best thing for this team. He has stepped up big and especially for a young sophomore. Believe his first start was either Ryle or Harrison ???and stopping the run has come easier to the Colonels. The Blue Colonel defense has played some very impressive ball games lately and I think they are peaking at the right time.

The last 4 games have been against Harrison, Holmes, Conner, and Greenup. I'll go out on a limb and say the Golden Eagle run game will be better than any of those and present multiple threats.

You won't see Cov Cath playing base 3-3 against a team like Johnson Central- you just can't. Wirth has developed a defensive scheme against JC when they come to the line with two TE's and a full house backfield which involves more men on the LOS and making each player stay assignment sound against the belly/ dive option. Can't say what happened prior to two years ago, but the last two years, Cov Cath has defended against this offense about as well as anyone Johnson Central has faced. At least that's what we hear in the stands.

I believe Sammons got dinged up a few games back and Shelton stepped in that role. He is a terrific young man and talent as is Sammons. The LB corp looks terrific next year.

As for this year, I'm nervous as all get out- I remember feeling the same way last year and that turned out pretty well. I'm going to say Cov Cath by a TD just to hedge my bet. I do think this JC team seems to be willing to break away from their traditional run, run run scheme. Run will be the first most obvious goal- but they may turn to the pass quicker than past JC teams. Just hope for a good clean and safe game.

As much as I would like to see Cov Cath win, I think JC wins easily because of the injuries. If the Wagner(s) and Dressman play it could be close.

 

If Alex Wagner isn't at least 90% it will be difficult for the Colonels to win. He and Zumdick are crucial to stopping the belly option. The defense they have employed the last two years has relied heavily on the Safeties to play discipline defense, and be sure one on one tacklers. While there is some young talent in the secondary, they drop off significantly as sure tacklers compared to Alex Wagner.

 

They other thing to remember is that CovCath's offense was able to control the game the past 2 years with the balanced run/pass attack. If Adam Wagner is not able to play, they will become way to one dimensional. McGinnis can do his part running the ball, but he is not nearly as accomplished a passer as Adam. I believe Dressman is still unable to throw very well, so that leaves about 50% of the offense off of the table.

 

Last year CovCath's o-line dominated the JC's d-line, and Dressman, for the most part, had his way passing and running. While the O-line has been decent at protecting the QB this year, they have not done a good job of run blocking in general.

 

As a result I think this game will be a tough one for the Colonels. If both Wag's are healthy and play, I think their chances are good. If either are less than 90%, I think it's a toss up.

 

It would be a nice time for the early season Special teams to show up again. A TD on a KOR or PR would be huge!

I think Johnson Central will win but it will be close.
