I agree that no one should get caught up in comparing games versus Holy Cross. Mainly because there were running clocks involved and the Holy Cross defense simply does not tackle.

For example, as mentioned Abernathy had 25 carries for 127 versus NCC. 10 of those carries for 80 yards and both TDs came after the running clock had started.

So I would not use any stats from the HC games to try and figure this game out.

What I would use is the predicted weather forecast ........if it is bitter cold does that hurt the passing and kicking game and if so which team does that effect more?

And one other factor.........Neither team has played in such an important game where neither is a decided underdog and the game should be close. Probably since 2005 for Newport and maybe never for WV even though they have been in a regional final (as a decided underdog in 2012).

So do nerves play a part? Can Newport overcome the WV crowd? Will WV be too amped playing in front of the large crowd?

Lloyd when Walton played both times in 2011 and 2012 in the playoffs you could say was going to be close so I don't think that part is right but the rest is true.

My point isn't that it should be a close game and these teams have not been in close games.

My point is there a lot is on the line because the winner will have a very good chance of advancing a lot deeper in the playoffs than normal. Normally NCC is sitting there as a heavy favorite. That will not be the case this year even if NCC beats Lloyd. And whoever wins the other Region would likely be a close game versus whoever survives out of WV/Newport/NCC/Lloyd.

So a lot at stake in this game and that has not been the case since the move to 6 classes.

Just for the record and I have no dog in this fight but 90% of HC yards came against NCC's second team and even their freshman.

I think you are a little off on your calculation. HC actually got 48% of its offense against the NCC first team defense. Those are first half numbers. NCC was still playing first team through the first possession of the second half until they got to the running clock.

I stand corrected.

I was at the Walton/HC game last week and I will have to say that I was unimpressed. HC just simply can't tackle. Lattimore and Compton were good running the ball but who wouldn't be/hasn't been against that defense. Carr was owned all night long by #68 from HC and did NOTHING. Carr spent most of the evening on his back from being pancaked. Walton was so frustrated that they moved Carr to the other side of the line because he couldn't do anything. Newport will tackle and Newport will score. HC owned the clock too and just simply couldn't punch it in enough on top of the one play series that Walton kept getting and scoring at will on. Walton's defense is just not that good and they haven't played anybody to boot. If Newport doesn't blow them out big and Walton gets lucky, NCC will. Newport wins 42-14.

Newport can win and if they do, no way like you're thinking IMO. Newport definitely has talent, but to win like that they would have to play far more disciplined than what I have seen.

I agree with this. Big big game for both.

Nkypete strikes again...LOl...

David Carr was stopped (so you say) because he was held on every play! PERIOD............

Come on! If he was held every play, someone would've called it numerous times. Let the guy say what he wants, WV moves on and that is the most important stat.....PERIOD

David Carr was stopped (so you say) because he was held on every play! PERIOD............

Not saying that it made any difference but no one should be saying that #68 stopped Carr all night becuase he didn't. He was held all night and it doesnt really matter as you said becuase WV is moving on.#68 is a big kid and hopefully has some football ahead for him in his future! David Carr does for sure...

You called out a kid-by name-on a message board? Solid stuff there.

Newport 28 21 move on to play Newcath.

Same guy who pumped #68 in prior threads as best OL in NKY, and predicted Holy Cross to "Run 2A" in August. How's that looking now? Shame is, #68 was very impressive, probably the best OL on the field Friday. After that, the comments are foolish. I commented Friday it was nice to see #54 Carr getting back to game shape after missing most of the season due to injury. Looked like he played with a little too much depth, but never once saw him pancaked or on his back. Carr seemed to have 5 or 6 tackles and I know he recorded a sack early in the first quarter. I've watched Walton's defense several years, they flip-flop their front routinely throughout the game, some games after every play. I conclude utter nonsense on the #54 Anti-Carr posts, and wish him well the rest of the way and at the Blue Gray All-American game he is playing this January in Tampa.

For the sake of the thread, I like Walton in a close one. Two good teams, I like the home team in the playoffs.

I think this will be a close one but think WV will pull out the "W"

Who does this #68 play for? If it is someone for Newport you're confused. They don't have a #68.
