I am really looking forward to this game. I think it is going to be a dandy. A lot of big plays for both teams, a lot of energy and big hitting on the field, probably several turnovers. I expect it to go back and forth with a lot of momentum swings. I will take the more discipline team in a game like that. I'm going with Walton-Verona.

I agree. Walton Verona might not have been the best team by far in 2A in the recent years, but the coaching staff there knows what they're doing. WV is a very disciplined team and they will not quit. Going to be a great game!

I was at the Walton/HC game last week and I will have to say that I was unimpressed. HC just simply can't tackle. Lattimore and Compton were good running the ball but who wouldn't be/hasn't been against that defense. Carr was owned all night long by #68 from HC and did NOTHING. Carr spent most of the evening on his back from being pancaked. Walton was so frustrated that they moved Carr to the other side of the line because he couldn't do anything. Newport will tackle and Newport will score. HC owned the clock too and just simply couldn't punch it in enough on top of the one play series that Walton kept getting and scoring at will on. Walton's defense is just not that good and they haven't played anybody to boot. If Newport doesn't blow them out big and Walton gets lucky, NCC will. Newport wins 42-14.

Wow, there always has to be one.

Not trying to be rude but it comes out that way. LOL!!! Walton is just not that good of a football team. There are good teams, mediocre teams, and bad teams. They are mediocre at best. This is a purely football statement. I have nothing against Walton. Just not impressed one bit. Newport is a better team IMO.

I accept the fact you think Newport is a better team but a blow out? Come on everyone on here even the Newport fans aren't expecting that. Sounds like you have an ax to grind with Walton. First game was tight and Latimore had 100 plus yards in a half of football. If you knew what your watching David Carr was double and triple teamed most of the night because they could not handle him one on one. Good planning on their part. Sorry I am not being mean it just coming out that way.

He wasn't double teamed as much as you think. LOL!!! I was watching that matchup all night. Maybe twice or three times at the most was he double teamed on a rollout play by the QB where the TE cracked back. Other than that #68 manhandled him all night long. He was double teamed on the other side when they moved him away from the beating he was taking on the right side by #68. Newport won't manhandle him like #68 did. They will just outrun him with their athleticism and speed. Latimore will get his no doubt but it won't be nearly enough. I've also seen Newport a few times this year and was actually at the Walton/Newport game early in the season. Newport is much better than they were early. Walton hasn't dramatically improved. I think that has to do with a very soft schedule. I will add on more points and say Newport wins 49-14. You've reassured me.

And you me..Lol!

Speaking from first hand knowledge, nobody is going to get anywhere comparing Walton-Verona's and Newport's offense against the Holy Cross defense. HC was very poor in that area, allowing numerous long plays for touchdowns to both teams. I saw explosive players on both teams. On the other hand, HC's offense against the two defenses might be worth comparison. HC gained 148 yards against Newport, 287 against Walton-Verona. Number of plays by HC on offense - Newport (41), Walton-Verona (69). Time of Possession - means nothing since both games were running clocks. Newport put HC on the running clock with 5:46 left in the 2nd quarter. WV put HC on the running clock with 6:31 left in the 3rd quarter. Abernathy (RB) of HC had a much better game versus WV than Newport (8.1 yards/carry vs. 5.1). Scott (QB) of HC had a slightly better game against Newport than WV (4.1 vs. 3.0). Scott scored twice against WV (once against first string, once against reserves). Abernathy scored once against the reserves of Newport. Newport has amazing cutback running (nothing ends up at the initial point of attack). WV has a great power game with a variety of runners. Newport appears to pass better (although not a fair comparison for me because I only saw WV attempt one pass). Last Friday against WV, I feel like HC might have kept it close if they could get a couple stops (that idea fell flat with the second half Bearcats deluge). In the Newport game, I never at any time felt like HC had a chance (they just got blown out of the water immediately by the Wildcats). Walton-Verona is at home which should be worth some points. It will be cold. If Newport comes out hot like they have in many games, look out. If the game is tight at half-time, I give the edge to Walton-Verona to do their second half damage. I think Newport is just a bit better defensively than WV, so I will pick them.

Nice assessment and fair. Do you have the stats Holy Cross vs NCC for a comparison too? I would be interested. Thanks.

Interesting to see that Walton's defense and NCC defense gave up very similar amount of yards. 287 for WV and 256 for NCC. Newport gave up 148 yards against the HC. All goes back to it's all about match ups and hard to compare mutual scores.

Thanks again to nkypete! Great stats!

Just for the record and I have no dog in this fight but 90% of HC yards came against NCC's second team and even their freshman.

I agree that no one should get caught up in comparing games versus Holy Cross. Mainly because there were running clocks involved and the Holy Cross defense simply does not tackle.

For example, as mentioned Abernathy had 25 carries for 127 versus NCC. 10 of those carries for 80 yards and both TDs came after the running clock had started.

So I would not use any stats from the HC games to try and figure this game out.

What I would use is the predicted weather forecast ........if it is bitter cold does that hurt the passing and kicking game and if so which team does that effect more?

And one other factor.........Neither team has played in such an important game where neither is a decided underdog and the game should be close. Probably since 2005 for Newport and maybe never for WV even though they have been in a regional final (as a decided underdog in 2012).

So do nerves play a part? Can Newport overcome the WV crowd? Will WV be too amped playing in front of the large crowd?
