No joking, and it's not a competition that I'd hope to win, but if we're talkin' strong antibiotics, dollars to donuts I'm on one of the strongest one you're gonna find.

 

While in the hospital I contracted a urinary tract infection probably from the catheter that is resistant to most antibiotics used to kill urinary tract infections.

 

I have what is called Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase or ESBL which is a chemical produced by bacteria. If gone unmedicated can destroy your urinary tract and your intestines and ultimately kill you. A nurse told me that it is a form of E. coli.

 

Not cool considering I just had colon surgery, and was just trying to do the responsible thing by getting checked at age 50 with no symptoms of anything, and then entering the hospital to get a little extra bonus deathly bug that I did not sign up for.

 

My surgery was last Thursday and by Saturday I was in misery with the infection. Late that night I began a normal antibiotic because the doctors were unaware that I had this strong bug.

 

(On a side not I spent hours on Saturday pleading nurses to take me seriously about an ever growing problem that I was having and they all wrote it off as irritation from just having the catheter taken out. I begged them to check my urine. Delays, errors, and mishaps basically made the process take 6 hours to discover that I indeed had an infection just as I had suspected. I literally took me having to freak out, which I did naturally because I was in some of the most craziest pain in my life, for them to ultimately take me serious, while they kept giving me the run around about their own errors delaying the process, all the while making me feel as if I was a bother to them).

 

They continued with this antibiotic until Tuesday until they became aware that it was not working.

 

On Tuesday they switched me to something called "Macrobid" I was released on Wednesday. Thank God I went home with the correct antibiotic.

 

The doctor who changed my antibiotic initially did not order any special restrictions on my room.

 

By Wednesday all the medical staff that came into my room had to put on gowns and gloves, and a big sign was put on my door that no one could enter without taking extra precautions.

 

Essentially multiple staff saw to me without taking extra precautions from Thursday until Wedesday while they continued to aid numerous other patients up and down the floor that I was on.

 

Very thankful that I had what appears to be life saving successful colon cancer surgery with no need for additional chemo treatment., but as you might imagine, a little freaked out that I went home with a bonus death bug that I'm not too wild about having gotten.

 

I will keep the faith that this antibiotic will ultimately do the trick, but WOW MAN...Seriously ??? :eek:
