Why is basketball different?

Featured Replies

But the numbers issue is taken care of in football by classification. Schools with larger pools of boys in the school to draw from take on each other for championships. If these football teams that have the advantage because of their availiable talent, which some say is so much greater in football, shouldn't it be easier to find that one or two great kids for basketball in that same pool. If the public schools can pull from thier same pool of talent for both sports, why is thier such the discrepancy? Then agian, what would we be saying if five or six (if possible) private schools were in the boys sweet 16?

4. The demographics involved with private schools is a factor.

Do you mind expounding on this point?

Thanks.

I'm not discrediting what they did and I agree with you. I'm just stating how it's different in basketball vs football. You can gang up in football but basketball won't allow for this. Unless you have "A Gouine" on the team. Make sure he has his pads on though!

Wouldn't be an Australian reference would it? :sssh:

IMO alot of public schools do not have the off season programs that your better private school teams have in football and do not use the spring practice properly. And that comes down to coachs being willing to put the time in to do the job.

You obviously don't know many high school coaches around the state. So your telling us that if a school with 25 kids had a hard working coaching staff, then they could compete with anyone?? Would the fact that some private schools fund the hiring of 16 plus coaches and other public districts are paying 3 or fewer have any impact???

Give some examples of off-season programs that you have seen. You don't even have to name them, just state what sets them apart from others?

What is the "proper" way to use spring practice??

I have seen some GREAT off-season programs in public schools.

Back to Guru's question:

The bottom line is football is THE ultimate team game. It takes numbers, chemistry, strength, conditioning, preparation, ability to stay healthy, soundness in all three phases, and some LUCK!! Basketball requires a much smaller number of individual athletes. You can have 2-3 great athletes in basketball and get a long ride in district and regional play. 2-3 great athletes in football mean nothing without O and D Lines, ability to tackle, play special teams, etc.

I have a question to throw out for private school supporters that I honestly don't know the answer to.

At publics, you will see a lot of players playing 2 or 3 sports and that precludes them from participating in offseason practices and weight training. Is that true of privates also, or are they more specialized? Do football players play baseball and cannot participate in spring practice?

Are you ready for the answer - here it is.

Trinity dominates football (5 out of 6 State Championships) because they play together as one unit. If you have a Chris Lofton he can elevate your whole team. In basketball 20% of your team on the floor is 1 player. There are schools everywhere that have at least 1 good player. In football it takes many good players or a group of average players that are motivated to move as one unit. That is the secret. Please do not tell anyone as I do not want the KHSAA to make a rule that says private schools cannot play as one unit.

15-time, plus the fact that a good player from T or X on any given night may if he's lucky be on the field for 20-25 snaps of the ball. A good player from other teams are on the feild for every snap (45-50)........................Not Rocket Science!!!!

Two years ago, Trinity had 3 or 4 football players playing baseball as well as football, and 2 or 3 playing basketball as well as football. Granted, one of them was Brian Brohm, but we don't have 1400 Brian Brohms attending Trinity. :D

Is that pretty normal? Only a few. Most of the rural schools I know have several.

I don't get it....almost everyone states it's a numbers thing...Trinity has over 1400 boys to make up a b-ball team...J-town has 900 and something students of which 500 and something are boys (forgive me if I am off on the numbers)..you mean to tell me that T can't find enough athletes to make up a good b-ball team but it can find 30 or 40 kids to make a good football team?!

This makes no sense!!!!

I agree it does not make a lot of sense but T did have one of the best basketball teams in the state last year. Just did not make it out of regionals.

You want to know why....because they did have some good talent and many of those kids had played b-ball together for many years.

Football requires alot more financial support to be successful- equipment, facilities, and coaching staff. One helmet can be as much as $170. It is tough for alot of schools to make that type of commitment. Those that are able and choose to do so, public or private, are successful. Basketball requires much less and more schools are able to provide what is needed.

Tradition plays a role, and it is a big part of the private schools, especially, Trinity and St. X.

The trend that gets my attention is the dramatic improvement in football in this state across the board, public and private. And, looking at scholarship numbers, most of the best athletes are playing football. I see alot more positive about football programs, public and private, in this state than negative.

Amen! Amen! Amen! If it were all about numbers and resources, Trinity & X should be winning a basketball championship every year. But Football is HUGE in those schools...HUGE! We don't begrudge the winning schools their basketball championships. We've been working hard to reach that level. Coach Szabo and staff are EXCELLENT, and we've really come a long way, comparitively speaking. (I'm using the term "we" as collective statement, btw).

CovCath's starting 5 in basketball:

One also plays baseball.

One also plays football.

Three only play basketball.

Off the top of my head. If Bovard or Jacobs play baseball and I don't know it then I apologize, but I believe what I have above is accurate.
