The New "Ummm"

Featured Replies

While sitting at my work station this morning, I could not help but hear a conversation between a 30 something female and another co-worker (one of those conversations that everyone could hear, nothing personal). In this short conversation I heard the female say the word "like" 36 times! I couldn't stand it any longer and told her, "did you know you used the word "like" 37 times? She said, "Oh, like wow!" To which I responded that's 38. So "like" is the new "umm". Makes me cringe. :wideyed:

How could I not "like" your post?

Like, what is really the point of your post??

My 19 year old, A-B college student has this habit. I drive her crazy because I point out to her every time she says the word like. The other bad language habit she has is over use of the word "literally" She literally says literally whenever she's describing something.

Like equals quotation marks.

I know, right?

Literally? Like, that literally can't, like even be true. Literally.

That's another one! Oh, don't forget, "really?". The quotation marks are for you mcpapa. :D

I have worked with a couple of really smart ladies at various banks over the past couple of years. You wouldn't know how smart they were because they overused "like" and and had a "sorority girl" lingo and focus. The one girl would constantly talk about her big and little. It was so unappealing and childish.

You know?

Her big and little? What, were her boobs asymmetrical?:lol2:

LOL.

Actually, most women have one boob that's smaller than the other. So probably, yes.

My daughter is somewhat guilty of that. Her tweets mention her "big" and "little" all the time, but thankfully, she use those terms in conversation much. At least around me.

A friend of mine from England says that it drives him nuts when he constantly hears the youth around him start every sentence with "Basically".

He says he might be sitting at McDonalds and they'll be a table of teens or college aged kids nearby who will say it over and over to the point that he wants to scream.
