After watching Conner begin sluggish against Grant you have to wonder if they thought they were going to have an easy game. That being said, I don't think they will take Scott lightly. It all comes down to the defense. Can Conner stop Scott? Big runners tend to be trouble for Conner, but Conner wins a tight game because they score last.

Hopefully someone tells Scott to be prepared for the Conner DL to cut them when they try to block, not just on goal-line, but EVERY SNAP... What do you tell kids that aspire to play college ball, when you have them cut the blockers every play? :sssh:

The last two years this game has basically come down to the last possession. Scott has talent and size, but not quite the depth they need, especially on the DL. They played poorly against Cooper, probably one of the worst games they've played in the last 3 years. Against SO, they had a chance to take command of that game, but made critical mistakes in the red zone. The defense struggled against the pass vs Cooper, but really didn't play all that bad against SO. Scott hasn't been able to do much in the passing game, especially downfield as the OL hasn't pass blocked real well. This is a game I think Scott SHOULD win. However, they need to eliminate mistakes, and need to come up with more big plays both offensively and defensively. One real area of concern is the kicking game. They haven't had much success converting PAT's, and in close games, this could be a factor. A win here would do a lot for their confidence, and if they can get by a decent Mason County team next week, could put them on a roll going into the playoffs. This whole region seems up and down this year, so any of the 4 teams from this district could manage to win a few playoff games this year.

Let's remember that two years ago, the game at Scott would have never been close had Fogle played and last year Conner won 32-20 and the game was never in doubt for the Cougars. Game certainly did not come down to the last possession. I know you are looking for optimism, but keep things in proper perspective.

I do agree that Fogle was a big part of that team, and would have made a difference, but the expectation was still that Conner would blow Scott out. Scott was winning that game 2 years ago in the second half, and I believe had a 4th quarter lead. And last year Scott did have the lead in the second half, before Barker eventually picked them apart converting some huge 3rd and longs.

I was thinking the same thing.

 

Last year was a great step forward, but what have they done to improve? Getting a winning record in 2013 was a start, but you have to do something that will take the focus off of scheduling easy teams to get to a winning record in the following year. You need to start beating more teams than just Grant Co. in district.

 

I will give them next season to do so, 1 year isn't enough time imo, I will give them the benefit of the doubt but next year they need to start winning some more district games.

I don't think this is the year to ask that question. It's almost an entire new starting lineup on both sides of the ball (I think just 1 starter on offense and 1 on defense, and only a couple more who got any significant time last year) and only about a dozen seniors, of which only a few are contributors. There's a good chance none of the seniors play football at the next level. Next year will be the time to wonder, with the move to 4a, (and into a relatively average district) and bringining back most of the starters, plus better depth with the maturation of this years very good Freshman class. You also have to remember, with one more win this will be the first time ever the program has had back to back to winning seasons. It's hard to say they aren't moving forward when taking their history into account. This year from the beginning was pegged as a rebuilding year, and I don't think anyone would have picked them to finish higher than 3rd or 4th in the district. Many had them pegged to lose to Newport and Holmes. Hopes did get raised, and a loss to Conner would be disappointing, but it's crazy to say at this point the program is going off the rails. 3 years ago Scott wasn't mentioned in any football conversation except as potential homecoming opponents.
