Count me as one that thinks he definitely could've started at those schools. I think you guys are underestimating the effect of competition in practice. I think with the rest of the players on the rosters of those teams you mentioned pushing him every day that he would've been an even better player at one of those schools. I watched all 4 schools (Ludlow included) several times last year and could name specific players he could've started over but that's not fair to those players to name them like that.

 

As far as doubting Pelle from Silver Grove, you prove the very point you are trying to argue against by making that statement. People doubted him and he only went on to be D2 player of the year and go on to make a living in Europe for a few years, so I guess everyone was wrong on that kid.

 

I value your opinion on most things and really appreciate the work you put into this site, but I think you are off on this one. Just my 2 cents.

I have no doubt Howard would be in the rotation at Holmes, Covcath, and Newcath...I just don't think he would have started.

 

At Holmes he wasn't starting over Chames/Hill in the front court or even Housely at the "3." I do think he could have been first off the bench though.

 

At Newcath, who would he start over? Schulte or McDonald? No. Weyer? Probably not. He would have been the 6th or 7th man with Grant Moeves off the bench.

 

As Clyde said, he could have possibly started at Covcath but it wouldn't have been over Schuh or Schult. It would have had to be at the 3 and Heppler was pretty solid for them last year.

 

The best player at most small schools would likely be in the rotation at a lot of these big schools, but my point is, most of those players don't get the recognition they deserve unless they are playing against a tougher schedule that includes more than just DIII schools.

 

Look at VonHandorf...as good as he was at VM as an 8th grader, he didn't truly get noticed until last year when he moved on to Covcath.

 

Snapp is another example and he plays at Newport...a DII school. People were still doubting him coming in to this summer. What was the knock on him by some on here? "Look at the schedule he is putting those numbers up against."

 

You also don't hear about the small school kids playing AAU ball which hurts their exposure.

 

I'm not trying to knock any of these kids. Anyone who knows me personally knows I go out of my way to help these kids any way I can and at no cost to them or their parents. But you can't deny that playing a DIII schedule doesn't hurt their exposure. That's the only point I've been trying to make all along because you were upset I didn't mention any of the better kids at the small schools. I can't mention someone if I don't know about them.

I'll also say a little overrated is true. It's not like St.Henry doesn't have good feeder schools to be an elite program in NKY.

IHM is one of St Henry's biggest feeder schools and always has talented basketball players but they for some reason lose most of those players to Cov Cath. Same goes for the girls to ND except for this year on the girls side. Is it the coaching or a status thing?

I seem to recall some that were bemoaning the fact that he would have been a good future hooper at St. Henry but he chose CovCath, and then ultimately (for whatever reason) didn't participate on the 9th grade team at CovCath. I suppose I could be mixing up a couple of kids' stories, but that seems to ring a bell to me.

I remember not too long ago one of the IHM guys played Freshman hoops at Cov Cath, but then only played football after that. Pretty good footballer - Troy Timmermann (sp?) I have been told that at least one of IHM's best, if not their best 8th grade player will be going to Cov Cath next year. The big tall center whose name escapes me. He and Thelen will give Cov Cath two pretty solid freshman big men next year.
