theguru Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Beechwood was backed up inside the 10 and fumbled the ball, CCH took it in for a TD only the refs blew the whistle. On the replay the commentators pointed out that the whistle came after the ball was out so I ask you again, did the officials cost CovCath a chance to beat Beechwood?
DragonFire Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Did that happen on a drive in which Beechwood went on to score a TD? Because that's the only way I'm seeing a two TD swing to make it a chance to win.
frankdracman23 Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Yes. It was a blown call plain and simple. That happens I guess. They also missed the call that should have awarded Beechwood a safety though. That was the very definition of grounding the ball to avoid the lost yardage and in this case it was in the endzone.
BuddySugarDavis Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 No excuses. Plenty of calls on both sides that were blown. Didn't cost them the game, because this one was never close to begin with.
FanofMany Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 site traffic generator? Doesn't appear Cov Cath fans are biting. Lots of bad calls both ways. Haven't watched the video but heard the Cov Cath QB fumble was also a fumble.
Voice of Reason Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 I did not want to make this comment in the game thread. It always seems like whining when people complain about officials. But if we are going to talk about the officiating, it was my opinion that the officials had a worse day today than Covington Catholic. There were numerous bad calls against Beechwood in the first half. The CCH wide receivers were holding all day and there was one holding call. There was an obvious pass interference penalty against CCH near the goal line that wasn't called. The last TD by CCH had a block in the back that was not called. There were more but I won't go on. On the fumble call, it looked to me that forward progress was stopped and the ball was ripped out as the Beechwood ball carrier was being pushed backward.

Agreed, you would think they would have gotten a better crew for a tv game.
AAATC Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 No, officiating did not change the outcome of this game. The refs did have a rough game, but it went both ways. On the play referred to in the Guru's original question, forward progress had clearly been stopped and the whistle was being blown as the ball was knocked out. Yes, my vantage point was that good.....

On one of the short fields in the first half BWs Tyler Overstreet was called for personal foul. All he was doing was sustaining his block till the whistle and the pushed his player over the pile. I think BW ended up with a 3rd and 18 instead of 3rd and 3. Cov Cath QB also fumbled the ball near midfield but that was blown dead by quick whistle.

BW had the game well In hand at that point and even after that at they still Couldn't stop Bw.
BillyBob1967 Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 100% NO! Why are you trying to stir the pot?
Hellbird Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Ok, I am changing my opinion. Yes the officials cost Cov Cath the game. If the refs wouldn't have shown up then CCH could have played penalty free and sat on the ball the entire game until the end and then they may have been able to score on only the 2nd play of the game and went for 2 for the win.
75center Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Yes, the refs cost CCH a chance. They could have called 25 strategic penalties on BW and that might have given the Colonels a fighting chance.
Bluegrasscard Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Its interesting that mostly there are 'slow wistles' - until a key play when it would have been best to have a slow wistle. Asking refs to be perfect is too much today, though that is what many expect in the digital video/high def picture replay world we now have. Lets just ask they be non-biased and call what they see ast best possible. If that is done - things will usually even out.
