Its interesting that mostly there are 'slow wistles' - until a key play when it would have been best to have a slow wistle.

 

Asking refs to be perfect is too much today, though that is what many expect in the digital video/high def picture replay world we now have. Lets just ask they be non-biased and call what they see ast best possible. If that is done - things will usually even out.

That brings up the follow up question - if forward progress is stopped and the whistle has not blown, is the play dead? Or is it live play till the whistle?

 

You always hear play to the whistle but with slow whistles it brings up all kinds of complications. The late hit call the stopped a Beechwood drive for instance. If the player couldn't see the runner was down, no whistle had blown yet and he finishes a block then that is a problem.

It makes me feel better (not for the kids sake) that we over here in the western part of the state are not the only one's dealing with poor officiating this year.

The Justin Overstreet call (#50) was wrong in my opinion. Seeing it live, then again at home on replay--the ref that threw the flag had to move quickly because the Cov Cath player almost hit his leg. You can hear the whistle blow while the block took place, the large blue object had not finished hitting the ground when the whistle blew. Lineman are taught to finish the block to the whistle...thats what happened in my opinion.

The refs got a lot wrong on both sides....tough to be perfect, but it usually evens out.

The Covington Catholic TEAM cost themselves the chance to beat Beechwood. The officiating did nothing to help the Colonels cause, but by no means are the reason for the loss.

 

Congratulations to the Tigers on the victory. Hope it is the cornerstone to your 2014 State Championship run.

 

Time for the Colonels to regroup and get back to being the team that showed up the first four weeks of the season. And yes, I am including the Moeller game.

This season, in general, whistles do seem 'slow'. Forward progress is stopped, players are out of bounds, etc. A couple of seconds later or sometimes a few seconds later if there is a pile forming there is finally a whistle. I think it maybe due to the number of new refs and maybe they think if one blows it others do not need to or they are little timid on blowing it too soon. Then they talk to the players about late action - usually without a flag. But they need to the basic thing - blow the whistle hard till play stops, especially in emotional games.

If for argument's sake it was a bad call then it is a two possession game still in the 3rd quarter, the momentum swings a little and CCH had some success running right at the Tigers.

 

I do think it cost them a chance, a small one, but a chance.
